    Hello…
I have been reading yoy for a while and you managed to bring some tears to my face. I feel I have no right to complain as I mever experienced any particular incident personally and I left the company four month after joining. But I had to live that reality 24 hours a day and see and feel in my skin what that world was all about. My experience there has made me smaller, has destroyed my confidence, has made me afraid of facing the real world, scared of customer service… people often ask me how could I leave emirates and sometimes I wonder if it was just my exagerated mind… thats why words like yours make me feel im not alone. That it wasnt in my imagination. The damage was real…
now im working in a super market as a store assisstant and it is hard to get back on track… but im making it. Just wanted to share a few words with you and thank you for your blog. You are making a difference

Honey, I would stop writing this blog long time ago if there weren’t for people who are sending me stories like yours. They make me sad and angry at the same time.

No, you are not alone and yes – that experience in EK can destroy your mental and physical health and it can kill your self-esteem and will since you are in their complete possession while they are giving you that charity salary.

That place is cruel and cold and no wonder almost only bad and backstabbing, wasta managers stayed there leading the company to a total devastation.

Stay strong and think of it as one good experience. It made you stronger, you will realize that once you get your self-esteem back.

      Take care, honey.

    Dear Dragana,
Thnak you so much for you inexhaustable energy and for your continous strife to provide an open platform for EK employees and management to voice their opinion and concerns.
Being an ex-CC myself through the years of 2008-2011 I saw the company going into a steep decline regarding treatment to employees and working environment. What started off as a tolerable and oftentimes joyful experience quiclky desintegrated into a farce and borderline human rights abuse, with extended and physicaly impossible to handle working hours. The on-board seniors lost their sense of judgement (what I believe their primar role should be) and started thriving on humiliation, intimidation and exploitation of the crew , doing very little themselves.I consider all those negative chages a direct result from poor comany HR management and policy. That is not to say I have not met wonderful people, I have, and to this day I remember their faces, names and the flights they made so much better. But those were more of an exeption among countless desperate employees.

To summarize my experience I would like to say that I saw most of my fellow CC friends become more and more bitter and by the time I left after merely 2 years and half of service, most of them have left or escaped Dubai. There were various reasons for our dissatisfaction, but none of them was weakness of character or imposibility to tolerate high workload and demands. It was the feeling of being disposable, replaceable, undervalued and under constant threat of punishement.Sometimes, just like Laura, I wonder :”Was it all in my mind?”.But I learned to believe myself better.I grew in many ways.I had wonderful and horrible times during my stint in the sandpit, but I am not looking back. I am generally very grateful for the chance to experience being a cogwheel in the mincing machine that EK turned out to be, to face the modern day slavery in a subdued manner upon myself and to witness it infliced in all its power to the poor souls of the South Asian labourers.I am grateful, but I will never have respect for a company and country built on bones, blood and lies.I know the wonderlust and the need for financial security that lure so many people into this job. Yes, they say the grass is greener on the other side, but there is no grass to speak of in Dubai whatsoever.
I am having a very good after-life since I resigned, I am lucky enough to have found a new job as a teacher, where I feel the rewards for my effort on daily basis, I go to school with a genuine smile on my face and I enjoy being entrusted with the power to control my working process without constant supervision, sleepless nights and days and heart palpitations caused by extreme stress. I am free from the strain of maintaining a long-distace relationship and all the sadness it contributed to my existence in EK.
I do miss the cheap and affordable staff tickets, I do pay rent and utilities now and I don’t get to see my friends on the 5 continents as often, but overall it is a huge positive change. Whenever I travel, I do so with leisure, relaxation and without urgency, and I no longer have the sinking feeling in my gut when I think of going back to work.

So, if an aspiring CC is reading this, please, do your research, know what you are getting yourself into, be in the clear that joining such a company is an act of statutory support to its values (the above listed exploitaion, bullying and labourers’ rights violations) and spread this information. Our voices need to be heard, and EK’s derogatory policie must be exposed.Consider your options before becoming a part of it.

So thank you again, Dragana, hvala, i jelim ti sve naj-lepse!

I have been with Emirates for 4,5 years and I wouldnt be able to describe the experience better than you did. Stress, unreasonable workload, many bullying seniors and managers, no appreciation for hard work except warning letters for sickness, back stabbing and fear culture supported by the management.

Not sure if you read this article recently. Another horrible greedy event organized by Emirates yet not mentioned that the organizer was ek. Same thing happened with the blind passenger with the dog – they simply road “dubai based airliner”. All this sponsorship of football teams yet not a single motivated staff. The article above goes to show what could have happened that night if a small stampede had broken out yet Noone came out and fixed anything (as usual) – lets just brush our problems under the carpet. Pls continue to do what you are doing and let’s hope the real changes come in 2015!

I only read few paragraphs of your blog and then decided to give up… You complain about not getting a severance package for resigning as the Federal law says you should get? Which law? I work in the US and when you give a resignation in US the company has the right to kick you out same day without a goodbye let alone PAY for weeks/months you didn’t. So suck it up butter cup! That’s corporate world for you ok?

Then you said you had to work 12 hr days 4 days in a row. Cry me a river, I worked in U.S. at a major airport for European airlines and we were there 12 even 16 hr shifts for days if there were delays, angry passengers threatening you, police showing up… I remember working 12 days in a row… Not once I complained or went out to town to write a blog about my experience … I had a supervisor treating me like shit in front of passengers and this was all in US so stop being a cry baby… And honestly if you wrote a letter to anyone of the chairman’s caliber you’d be in trouble EK or no EK. Remember when you work for large corporate no matter what industry, what part of the world you are just a number to them, not sure what your expectations were.

Why should you accept something that goes so strongly against human nature and your own well-being? “Big corporate world” is not something that people didn’t create by themselves. And I know for many big companies that have better working atmosphere and labour rights.

I read some of the articles and there is something I have to ask – if I missed it somewhere, sorry, I’d like to point me to that particular article. My question is – what did you sign in the employment agreement, the initial one, when you signed up for the job? Was there any mention about the work hours, termination terms, etc?

            Like

          • Anonymous

What was signed in the employment agreement is only to make the victim (employee) think they have recourse in law. Since EK is a semi government company it is NOT subject to UAE Labour Law. Which means when EK send you a “contract adjustment letter” in their favour, there is nothing that the employee can do. No justice at EK.

Couldn’t keep myself from not commenting on your post Mr. N/A. Obviously as you are in US not UAE, are not aware of UAE Labor Law which clearly states:

      “END OF SERVICE REMUNERATION
      ARTICLE (132)*

The employee who has completed one year or more in the continuous service, is entitled to the end of service remuneration at the end of his service. Days of absence from work without pay are not included in computing the period of service, and the remuneration is to be calculated as follows :-
      1. Twenty one day’s pay for each year of the first five years of service.
      2. Thirty days pay for each additional year.
Provided that the entire total remuneration shall not exceed two year’s pay.”

So she doesn’t cry to get something that doesn’t belong to her but something that she is entitled to according the law.

Everyone of us has choice to work overtime, the employer needs to ask the employee if he/she is willing to work overtime and pay the employee for that overtime as it’s mentioned in articles 67 & 68 of the UAE Labor Law. Very few employers in UAE respect this law.

To say a word about writing a letter to CEO and getting in trouble… definitely disagree that it will happen in any other company. CEO should listen to his employees as they are the ones that make all these companies 5* or best in world as they are striving to be. And one more thing Mr. N/A there are not employee unions in UAE to protect the employees of abuse and humiliation or bulling. Either you will suck all of it and have your head down and work to provide for you and your family or confront and be terminated and threatened or just leave.

It was your choice to be treated as shit (as you are saying), and hope it will change but first you need to believe in yourself that you don’t deserve such treatment and have self-confidence to confront your bullies.

Just to mention that I am not an Emirates employee nor ever been. I am HR Manager and seeing what’s happening really makes me sad. I am employee oriented and believe me I’ve been thrown from meetings when tried to do something better for my employees.

      Wish you best of luck!

Dear Dragana keep up the good job and hopefully things will start to change for better 🙂

      So sreka!

Hi. I am pretty sure you have looked at the fact that the check in time (the one on the records) for CC, not to mention Purser and SFS, who have to be there earlier, is more or less the time we reach the plane. Cockpit crew are even more restricted on flight time limits. So if they used the real check in time, a tenth of the flights would be illegal (even for GCAA). Or in other words, they are illegal.
I wonder how they get away with it in audits.
    Cheers.

But if you had three warning letters…..and asked inappropriate questions in a public forum…you must have known you were on thin ice. In fact you must have almost expected to be terminated, but you persisted anyway. As a result, you were terminated. I don’t quite see what you are complaining about. Are you complaining because you expected them to just keep sending you warning letters for ever? Or are you complaining because they warned you that you would be terminated and then followed through with the threat?

Imagine for a moment you have your own business. (It’s obvious you have a vivid imagination, but don’t worry, you could never run a business). You have an employee who continually does the wrong thing. You counsel them on the inappropriateness of their actions. They continue their inappropriate behaviour. You counsel them again. And again. But they just don’t get it. They have their own agenda and just see your business as a way of trying to prove that they are important, or educated, or successful. In reality they are delusional, toxic and a liability to you. What will you do? Keep them on the payroll and let them damage your business? Or terminate them? Wake up Dragana, you’re a nobody who desperately wants to be someone.

And now you pretend to be a bastion of the downtrodden EK employee, a shining light in the murk of Dubai. You have far too high an opinion of yourself, your ability, your opinions and are kidding yourself if you think that, even if you go on with this drivel for the next fifty years, anyone in EK will take any notice. You are just publicising how much of a sulk you are, how desperate for a job you were to join EK in the first place, and how hopelessly lost you are now.

On one hand you say you want meaningful dialogue with EK and then you go and write incredibly childish blogs. You talk about ‘creating your own reality’, but I don’t think you know what reality is. Having read some of your postings, many of them contradict each other. You are not getting anywhere other than creating a club for yourself and all the other people who can’t handle a proper job. You are achieving nothing. And you wonder why Shk. Ahmed doesn’t respond?

You messed up Dragana. You got fired. Get over it.

Warning letters is old way of managing people. Gone are the days where companies warn their staff. It is very premitive way of managing people through fear. Those warning letters were done away by companies in the eighty’s . Emirates is still in the eighty’s way of managing things. Their management ideas are old fashioned, governed by some useless westerner who cannot get a job in his home country, comes to Emirates because he holds a western degree and has got kicked out by companies in his home country. All premitive ways of managing people are imported into emirates. Employees have to bear all this nonsense.

If one was told harshly each and every single time do you think that method garners respect or do you think it might make for a disgruntled employee?

P.s. I don’t mean being told harshly for a situation that might jeopardise the safety of thousands but being told harshly for insignificant and minor things.

Great posts I really enjoy reading them and gaining so much insight into it all.

My girlfriend works with emirates, on her flight yesterday she had a Male crew member ‘Muhammad’ trying to inappropriately touch her, grabbing her ass and saying explicit things to her, she kept pushing him away and telling him to stop but he continued during the flight and back at the hotel, even her senior was trying to hit on her saying she had the prettiest eyes he’d ever seen.. I told her that she should report it asap and to make sure she is very firm with this kind of behavior… as she said she felt molested. Some of the other women crew were making fun saying how he likes her etc.. I feel helpless all the way back here in Australia.. What steps can be taken when this kind of thing happens?

    Thanks!

Unfortunately, as I understood there is no Law on sexual harassment in Dubai. Nevertheless, internal EK manual contains references on harassment and forbids it. Your girlfriend can try and complain, but by my experience EK managers often violate or ignore this manual or complaints on harassment (mine was ignored, for example), trying to get rid of (to fire) all the people who complain and “make problems”. She should be very careful to which managers she is complaining to and who she is reporting (because, many have strong connections in management so they get away with a lot of manual violations).

I used to live in the UAE long time ago, long before even emirates existed. I have witnessed the rise of emirates from their on turf. Management issues existed from the very beginning. Over the years emirates brand value and risen. Issues with management have disappeared or so I thought till i ran in to this article on random.
Every person who works on emirates other than locals (its rare), are mainly expats working on a dubai based airline. I hate to say this, what makes you think (that is the airline staff) will be treated differently from those labourers who build the Burj khalifa. Sure you might not be treated as bad as someone who makes a few bucks a day in the dessert heat, but it ain’t any different. The underlying fact is, your an expat and they going to fuck with you regardless. Don’t ever think working in a fancy airline in the middle-east will change your life. Its fucking middle-east.

How you can pay a salary of 100-150 euros to aircraft cleaner who cleans over 10 aircraft a day and being treated like an animal (or 250-300 euros to catering guys lifting heavy containers during their over 12 hrs shifts!) and then say that the company is not being subsidized by the government and is a fair competitor to european airlines! Just want to add that its the whole country and the region is like this!

I have been wanting to join the company and recently got invited to attend an assessment day and now that desire has just gone. At their I assessment day/open days they paint this “pretty” picture of how lovely it is working for the company, the benefits that comes with it as well as having a tax free salary.
I have always wondered about why they are constantly recruiting and have such a high turn over (which is never good) but because the current CC doesn’t says anything about terrible working conditions you just tend to believe what they say with regards to the” airline is growing , current CC are being promoted so they need more staff etc.”

Why did they get away with not paying Drag and and honouring Taimour’s medical treatment. Staff turnover doesn’t mean staff promotion. It means huge numbers leave as they can’t physically and emotionally manage with the gangsters that run a number of departments

    Hello All,

I am a final year student at university studying BSc Aviation Management, and I am currently producing a dissertation (thesis). The title for my study is “Why is the Middle East suffering from high rates of attrition in flight attendants?”, part of my research is to collect primary data.

If you are a current/ex-flight attendant your opinions matter!

Any information you provide me with will be included into my final report (whatever you say will be kept in confident and no personal information will be used) and will help draw conclusions and recommendations to airlines on what they are doing wrong, when it comes to looking after their flight attendants.

If you can spare a few minutes, I have included a link that will take you straight to the questionnaire. Where you will see a participant information sheet; further explaining why you have been invited to participate, a consent from and the questions. (IF your airline is not listed on Q2, tick ‘Other’ where you can type in the name of your airline)

IF THE LINK DOES NOT WORK, PLEASE COPY AND PASTE IT IN YOUR WEB BROWSER’S URL

    https://coventry.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/flight-attendant-views

It should only take approximate 10-15 minutes to complete.

Also do not hesitate to share the link for the questionnaire to current/ex flight attendants.
Looking forward from hearing from you!

    Kind Regards,
    Student

“human resources strategy for cabin crew is simple: hire young, attractive people, mainly women, from poor countries, give them a short, fixed-term contract, treat them badly, dismiss them easily, and then hire more. Given that the Third World is full of people eager to live a better life (indeed the promise of a glamorous life) and in many cases to send money home to family, this model is infinitely sustainable.”

I worked for emirates and I loved every bit of it I think if u do ur job u are in no position to have any issues with them and honesty is a virtue being honest gets u all the support u need but if u happened to play up and want to blame the company then that’s ur fault because that’s what half the staff do and at training they warn u of everything and no not just the glamour of the job. Be fair and do admit it is a job of a lifetime and u don’t realise until it’s gone or until u messed up and there is no turning back! And any job has its pros and cons and fatigue is everywhere with any work if u don’t control ur party nights of course u will be fatigue they know when u are rostered that’s why they roster rests and layovers we all know 24hr lay over is enough if u rest it but if u decide to enjoy ur 24 hr layover u will be tired and u will play up and u will go through depression and etc etc and u don’t deal with managers unless u have gone off track otherwise there is support every where u go.

Outstations have limited chance to get to know about what is going on over there. However, could imagine.. believe me..managers are under similar(or heavier) pressure. These days, I witness many good people leave that organization and head back to their hometown. Only the ones causing trouble are enjoying the nice sunshine ( I would say ) in Jumeirah.

Highly appreciate your efforts to better the situation and welfare of the remaining colleagues.

If 99 percent of 25000 cc love their job so much, why are over 20 percent leaving every year? If the job is so good why don’t they have a Labour Law? If the job is so good, why do they have to go to HQ to report sick? If the job is so good why do Managers like Hala Mansour punch cabin crew? If the job is so good why are some cc being forced to work with 17 hours between shifts and 130 plus hours per month? If the job is so good, why not give a pay rise? If the job is so good why is there a hiring freeze for three months so other crew have to work harder? If the job is so good why don’t ek publish the results of the employee survey as promised? Lots of whys so please answer these valid points..

Shame shame shame. Or should I say sharam sharam sharam. It is always hilarious watching the Hinglish-speaking clowns trying to score brownie points on behalf of their Brit racist managers. You idiots sit in Costa having just brought the tray to your manager and agreeing with all the bullshit they come out with. Your standard of written English is so poor that you stand out like a sore thumb! You shame yourselves not the scores of hard working and honest indians who make up they back bone of ek. Stop kissing those white butt cheeks yaar. Answer some of the questions like why over 5000 cabin crew leave EVERY YEAR. Please do they needful and revert…

Shame Shame Shame. There is a great thread about cabin crew fatigue. Here is the link. All lies I presume. What do EK pilots know about the safe operation of a plane with several hundred people on board? Clearly they have to be ‘guided” by idiots like you. Do share your pearls of wisdom with all of us?

You britishbrainwashed american raped indian villager? Or maybe even arab or whoever you are? You thingk these values sustain life itself all corporate values are against human life, wanting a majority to work for a minority and its dogs like you, who lick a bone and growl and do tricks at their masters command,
You think 99% are happy??well 100% of these 99% would love to smash your fuing skull, ground staff, ramp, pilots and cabin crew are responsible for the most important part of operations, we can do without managers and their assliking ck sucking dogs, why should they work so much earn so little for tou to earn even the 5000aed you earn, remember if suddenly all of them or big part stop working you will have a real reason to call it “disruption of operations due to operational reasons” be carefull and start treating people with respect because neither Sadam nor Gadaffi expect the fate that was waiting for them in the end.

I’ll take a ‘mundane job’ over being an Costa puppet any day. At least I’ll have my dignity and a good conscience when I’m old.

As for “25’000 emirates cabin crew actually appreciate their jobs and what emirates does for them” What it does for them? Ok, we got awesome travel. For a while. Until the hours became so much that all you do is fly, sleep, fly, sleep, fly, sleep. No life at all. What else did EK do for them? Work them so hard they get depression. Punish them for calling in sick ‘too much’ (What is ‘too much’ when you have a serious illness, anyway?) Ruin digestive health, sleep pattern, moods, biorhythms that take YEARS to recover.

Give them complexes and anxiety because every g-d flight is some new stupid rule or this flight you do the service this way but that flight you do it a different way for some dumb reason some person in HQ who never flew as crew thought up to justify their existence in the office while the rest were getting made redundant.

I’m so glad I left, I may be working 3 jobs but you know what? I never felt as tired, wrung out and overall disrespected and unappreciated as I did while with Emirates. They truly do just see crew as a bag of flesh to be used and disposed of.

Let’s not even start on what Emirates DIDN’T do for poor Elena who “fell” from the aircraft…. no investigation, no communication, just more EK blame shifting and excuses onto the Ugandans. They didn’t even have the balls to stick up for their dead crew- and we know it’s because the truth would make everyone see how ugly they REALLY are.

but you, sitting in your office in HQ, know NOTHING of what the crew go through because you’re hiding behind your unanswered phone and your overflowing email inbox full of mails that sit unreplied for 6-8 weeks or let’s be realistic… never….

I’m not an Emirates employee but I couldn’t agree more with what has been written about how dishonorable and pretentious Emirates is.
I wrote to Emirates SVP HR Wayne Davies and SVP Cabin Crew Catherine Baird to highlight a loophole in the recruitment process which was exploited by someone who knew how to circumvent it – a cabin crew trainee deceived the recruiters despite having a visible tattoo behind her ear.
I also stressed this is not fair to others who applied in good faith, because anyone else who had honestly declared a visible tattoo would have been turned away on Open Day.
My emails were ignored. No action was taken, even though it is clearly written on Emirates website “No visible tattoos while in Emirates Cabin Crew uniform (cosmetic and bandage coverings not permitted)”
Clearly Emirates does not uphold standards, and choosing to turn a blind eye to dishonest behaivour only shows how Emirates breeds a dishonest culture. In fact, I’m convinced after going all other stories on your blog that Emirates is nowhere close to being a fair employer – it chooses to retain or dismiss anyone indiscriminately.
Given how Emirates does not have a transparent and honest culture, I hope all those who have not made it through the selection rounds know that they are really not missing out on anything.

    Very nice blog!

I wish I had access to this when I was an EK cabin crew during 2004-2011!

Emirates is, certainly, guilty. By failing to implement their own policies and failing to enforce benevolent (well intended?) regulations they themselves created. EK Employees, as any other rationally acting employees, make decisions to trade their labor for compensation assuming that the contract will be enforced. But poor health care, poor rest, inability to take meals, sexual harassment, hostile environment, etc are all violations of contract. Unfortunately, within UAE legal environment such contract can, but will not be enforced: GCAA, Courts, and Emirates Management are controlled by the same family. This same family is interested to keep the business running and money flowing, e.g pursuit of profits.

An abused, disenchanted, disgruntled , harassed employee has only one solution to improve her condition: to resign, because any legal battle to assert the rights is doomed to fail.

However, let’s not forget the darker side of the moon: employees voluntarily sign up these unenforceable contracts. Why?

EK employees consider that the total compensation they receive as result of working in Emirates (pay, travel, s*x, likes on pics on Facebook from high school friends, ability to brag on social media about their new job etc) is worth enduring abuse, harassment, injustice, unfairness, pay rises below inflation level etc. In addition, newbie employees may fail to do due diligence research about UAE Labor laws, its rejection of international labor treaties, enforceability of contracts when dealing with the Royal family, etc. Newbies get into trouble because they value the immediate benefits they gain as result of EK employment more than the future costs associated with: healthcare (often, failure to bear children), unmarketability of cabin crew skills, depression, fatigue, etc. And guess what? EK depends on this miscalculation. Young EK workers want everything NOW without regarding future costs for their immediate choices. And this is what EK success depends on: a continuous, diverse and enthusiastic flow of new joiners who prefer immediate benefits without due cost and benefits analysis involving a future period in their lives. When the queue of young enthusiastic workers is going to be slimmer than the flow of resigning people, then EK is in deep trouble. Before then – nothing will change.

I hope this blog will achieve its true purpose: informing wannabe crew about the costs in health, state of well being, marketability of skills, and their competitiveness on bride market TOMORROW for the benefits of travel and change of lifestyle they obtain TODAY.

I spent five years at Etihad Airways. I was a B777/787 captain, TRI, TRE, and Manager of Pilot Training. Many of the stories shared on this website are being duplicated in Abu Dhabi at the National Carrier. In my role as a manager there, I was privy to exchanges which I can only describe as human rights violations. Having finally had the courage to leave, I feel the need as well as the obligation to do something about exposing Etihad Airways. You’ve done a great job here with Emirates. Thanks for the inspiration.

    Everyone,
Someone just jumped off the aircraft, holding a glass bottle to her throat and the UAE newspapers and the company keep saying she “fell off”. She decided to kill herself, in uniform, on duty, outside Dubai, where pictures got published. It’s time to speak up and we have the support of RT news and all of those who left the company with a bitter taste. Let’s gather forces and honor Elena making the right noise.

While I fully support your sentiments, @It’s time, I think we need to be realistic.

RT News only genuinely supports R. And other journals, which appear to be more independent, are heavily influenced by EK’s advertising budget. Do not underestimate the power of EK, which exceeds that of some countries, let alone large companies. The fact that, after the tragic incident involving poor Elena, the plane and all staff were allowed to leave Entebbe virtually immediately, taking away all forensic evidence and contemporaneous statements, says it all. Back in Dubai, all staff will have by now been put through a ‘process’ and I hold out no hope that Elena’s family will ever find out the truth about what happened.

Also, ex EK staff who remain genuinely concerned for their colleagues have no voice as they are written off by the company as “just bitter”. It’s time, and it has been time for a very long while, for people within EK to stand up and effect change in EK. But that cannot, nor will not, happen.

In terms of numbers and operational importance, the most powerful group in EK is the Cabin Crew. But they would need to work as one and that requires communication. As we know, every aspect of communication in Dubai is monitored so any hint of collective action will be picked up and dealt with. And dealt with severely. Anyone involved in activity which challenges an employer in Dubai will end up in prison.

An equally potentially powerful group is the flight deck crew. But a quick read of forum posts on PPRuNe shows that they will not put their individual names to any communication to management, nor will most of them show any interest in a topic unless it guarantees them more money and/or fewer working hours. They have as little interest in their colleagues as does EK’s senior management.

And middle and junior managers across the company, who know what really goes on within EK and know it is not right, are unlikely to risk losing their beloved ID 90’s and potentially disrupt their retirement plans. The very few managers who have in the past voiced any hint of discomfort about how the company treats people have been quickly shown the door and then labelled as “bitter”.

The only practical action is for existing staff to leave EK. That will take time for many individuals but making it a goal is at least the first step, as it really is better elsewhere. Everyone, everywhere tells us that work in general, and companies in particular, are “getting worse”. That may be true but it does not alter the horrors of EK’s approach to human beings. This approach is epitomised by the head of HR Business Support. His twitter feed is riddled with self-inflating hype, jumping on the International Women’s Day bandwagon, but he hasn’t yet published one word to express any sorrow about the demise of Elena.

And everyone, inside EK or outside, should do what they can to discourage joiners. Perhaps sites like Paddleyourownkanoo could help? But existing EK staff should be very careful with communication, restricting any negative statements about EK to systems hosted outside of UAE, only accessing them from outside of UAE. (VPN’s from within UAE do not provide the safety many assume.)

The day I resigned from Emirates was definitely one of the happiest days of my entire life. The day I left the country safe and sound was another one of those.

I am still traumatized and I literally have PTSD. But my nightmare is finally over now.

Be very careful with what you wish… you might get the job.
