Emirates management tried to force a pregnant crew to an illegal abortion

We all know that women live harder lives. Their rate of unemployment is higher and they are less paid than their male colleagues globally. In some parts of the world they are still treated like second-class citizens without many basic human rights. This article is dedicated to all the women throughout the world who suffer just for being women.
This is the story about an Emirates cabin crew who found herself pregnant while working for Emirates Airline (EK). Apparently, EK management tried to force her to do an illegal abortion and searched for her in her apartment when she refused to do it.

E-mail from the crew

Hi !
I’ve just discovered your blog and I’ve found it very interesting. Thanks for taking the time to share this. As a former Ek cabin crew I can testify of what you are describing and I’d like to share my personal experience as well as asking your help on a matter I’m really concerned about..
I’ve been hired by Emirates airlines on xxx 20xx and everything went well at first, no paperwork to do, they basically convice you that you are in the best place on earth, that you have to advertise and show that Emirates crew is living the best life, enjoying, partying, discounts everywhere and so on… I’ve found it quite superficial and not as professional as a cabin crew position would be somewhere else with the importance of safety, security and you’re real role on board. I was disturbed by the company accomodation system, the curfew, having to ask before receiving family but I loved the job and didn’t think more about it at first. I’ve been dating another crew that I met right after I got in Dubai and in xxx 20xx (a year after I joined) I discovered I got pregnant… Please don’t judge me, I know how it works, I was careful and I never thought this could happen to me. I was actually very judgemental on this matter before it happened to me.

The nightmare started at this point. As you know it’s illegal to be pregnant without being married in the UAE so besides having to take the toughest decisions of my life regarding keeping it or not, I had to deal with what happened. I had 2 days of duty then 3 days off, I swapped the 2 days in order to have 5 days off in a row to go back to France and deal with the situation properly, without affecting my work. I’ve been even told that they give emergency leave on this type of situation, I guess I got the wrong doctor, wrong manager and bad luck..  I went to see the company doctor, big mistake since the information went straight away to my manager. The doctor told me that I shouldn’t go to france and got me in touch with a doctor who was illegally doing abortion in Dubai outside the hospital he worked in… That scared me and I kept telling her that there was no reason for me not going to France and coming back to work but she insisted and that seemed crazy to me, I felt like an outlaw (which I was as crazy as it seems…) and I was scared to undergo and abortion, by a doctor I don’t know, hidden god knows where and how.. Having to take the decision of aborting was hard enough for me. By the time I almost reached my accomodation my roomate called me to tell me that security entered my appartment and my room and seemed to be looking for something… I got even more scared, I was on a day off, it was supposed to be my home but it was never mine but the company’s.. I even thought they might have been looking for my passport maybe, I have no idea but my feelings were a mix between depression, hormones, fear and anger. All I wanted was to go home in France and deal with the diffucult thing I had to to.

I packed my suitcase, 2 of my batchmates and best friends were with me and one of them thought that security might have had the order to keep and eye on me and it might not have been a good idea to pass by them with my luggage. So she put on her uniform and passed on the lobby with my suitcase and I left the building after her. I was scared that my staff tickets could be blocked, to end up in jail or some crazy things that seem straight out of a movie, except it was real. Everything went well, I arrived in France and I exploded in tears and depression, as much as I loved the job I just couldn’t go back to Dubai. When I landed my flatmate called me to tell me that security went through my appartment again and asked her several time aggressively where I was and if I left the country. That was enough, I sent and email to my manager saying I resigned without the notice periode, that the uniform and most of the documents would be given to them by my flatmate and that I would pay for the rest. He responded that they decided to terminate my contract so officially, I’ve been fired.

It felt blurry and like a bad dream in my head, I had a breakdown, I still live it as a major failure, I feel guilty about everything and and it took me time not to blame me hardly about the pregnancy and all it caused. In a normal country and normal company you deal with your personnal issues on your days off, outside of your work environment, and it’s no one’s concern but yours. One is not supposed to have his appartment checked on request of his manager. I’m not entirely to blame on this and I decided not to give up on my passion of flying, I was good at it, I had great feedbacks from SFSs, and passengers, and I won’t let them take this from me.

I’ve just obtained the european Cabin Crew Attestation and I’m medically fit to fly so I’m really happy but now that it’s time to apply I’m afraid of mentioning I worked for Emirates. I don’t want to lie, pretend I’ve never flown and make up another job to fill the blank but I don’t know if Ek give feedback on former employees, if they’re in relation with other airlines for references checks etc.. so I’m asking for your advice on this.

It’s a long email, thanks again for your work and for taking the time, it means a lot to me and a lot of people I’m sure.
Have a wonderful year !

I don’t know what to tell you but for sure, what you said is absolutely true and that it’s illegal to be pregnant without being married in the UAE and for that, EK would use everything against you even though, they did so many illegalities in trying to sort things out…..their way!!

It is well known for everyone that expatriates doctors in Dubai are doing many illegalities and most of them are not professional enough to be called “Doctors”!!. I remember that colleagues used to pay for having fake sick leave reports as once they entered the clinic, they would say loud and clear that they want to pay for a fake sick leave and doctors would give them that HAPPILY as long as they pay for it!!

As a matter of fact when I have my Brain Tumor, 3 doctors have advised me NOT to let any doctor in Dubai -I mean from them- just to approach me for treatment and advised to go home…That was in Dubai Healthcare City, no wonder that locals do travel outside for treatment!!

Maybe you should talk about how they tried to deal with your case to the press and to be honest, I don’t think that new employers would bother to investigate about you I mean, if you show them that you are capable of doing the task then why they have to “investigate” about you!! They would consider working with EK is a PLUS. Again, do you think that EK would respond to their inquiries? if so, it is better to do this job internally rather than responding back to other companies!!

Indeed! Most doctors in Dubai are really doctors? I saw a so-called especialist in Dubai Healthcare City and she said I had a bunion on both feet, suggest surgery and I don’t have bunions at all, I had bursites. I don’t see HOW a specialist could not know the difference. So yes, I wonder whether they’re really qualified doctors. Not to mention the lebanese-brazilian surgeon who lost his license in Brazil and was back at work in the UAE. …

    I don’t kknow whete to start…
For sure you were briefed about UAE laws during induction period, which include ” illegal pregnancy ”
The way I see this, the Dr. In Ek clinic did his “immoral job” by suggesting a “doctor” for abortion as he/she thought you are considering this obtion and wanted to help you.
Also part of the Dr. Contract , he/she needs to escalate such matters to the concerned manager.. You can’t blame them.
As for the termination part.. I don’t see anything wrong with the decision.. as per your contract you will be terminated in absentia if you fail to attend duty for 6 consecutive days ( or not serving the notice period in your case ).
The only thing that I can see was “inappropriate” from ek side was sending the security to your room.. and im thinking what were they possibly looking for ….
And its also odd that security asked your flatmate if you had left the country… a manager would never ask security to check that.. they can easily track you via immigration department.
Sorry but I don’t think that ek mistreated you… and for sure they didnt “force” you to undergo abortion

I assume from your tone that you are one of God’s Gifts eg a ccm or cabin crew manager. The dirty immoral managers at ek are supposed to tell the police but they fear publicity. And brand damage. The cc goes to the Dr who writes to the ccm telling them the cc needs two weeks annual leave. It’s the way it is done so all parties get the meaning without saying it. Ek security have no right to enter her room unless present with Dubai Police. Ek is a cesspit of dishonest cheating immoral managers who hide behind no labour law, thuggery and bullying. Take a look in the mirror to day what you are. Back to Costas. I’ll have a cheese twist.

No im not even remotely related to cc management , however I do look into facts.. I don’t just blame ek for everything.. ya they do breach lots of rules… however I dont see any applied here.
And if u look into your accommodation manual/handbook you will find that security can enter your apartment without permission… they just need to provide a notice ( the only violation they did in this case)
And I like my cheese twist with Turkey 🙂

          The facts are as follows.
Not subject to UAE Labour Law.
As that is the case, they can do whatever they want. Please reread their attempt to screw Dragana.
          They stole money off her.
Sheikh Mohammed is the Ruler of Dubai. He owns Emirates and Emirates Group Security and Transguard and oversees Dubai Police. And you really think they will give notice in a place that is renowned for no rule of law? EK have no right to question a girl if she isn’t flying. They have no right to question her provided she is not acting as crew. They breach human rights my dear “im not even remotely related to cc management”
Next time you are in Costa enjoying your cheese twist, ask Abdul Aziz Al Ali when he will keep his promise to publish the employment survey…..
Don’t forget your discount and to wipe your mouth when finished 🙂

I doubt very much a dragana is mistaken. Your quality of written English suggests a native command with a flavour of corporate logic. The blog has caused huge embarasment to EK as all the Bonus seaking ethically challenged EK managers are shameless. They are bullies. There is no Labour Law for EK staff. Enjoy your Cheese Twist. With Turkey. Keep Discovering.

I read your comments however, EK has the power and authority more than police and trust me, I’ve seen a lot of scenarios that agree with that when I was working at the airport!! Yes…managers can change the facts as they like and EK Security can do whatever to reach what they want no matter if it is legal or illegal!!

The company asked you to do an abortion. Gosh Emirates is an unethical company. Whatever happens to an employee, they can ask to leave but not make you to do unethical things.that is why they are making big money with all unethical practices

First of all: pregnancy outside of marriage is illegal in the UAE. So is abortion. So… If you are pregnant here, I’m not sure of the official procedures, but I believe best case scenario you are deportated.

EK gives you an option. It is dark, and illegal and disgusting the way they did it with the crew? Yes. It is. Terrible. Reading it makes me sad.

    But…
    Think.
The reason they do it is because they don’t advertise it. They do give you an option. And god forbide i get pregnant I would like not to be terminated and deported straight away (if not arrested. Because it’s a crime after all).

Again. The reason they do it,it’s because it’s not public. We talk about it among us,but it’s not announced at the companies package.

    So… here’s my question:
What do you want to achieve with this post?
Because. Let’s be honest here. You won’t make EK procedures for abortion more human. You won’t change UAE law.
The only thing you can achieve is shaming EK into changing: for the worse.

Because the easiest for them is just to stop giving us a choice. Because articles saying “they forced me to resign or reported me to the police because I was pregnant” is within the law.

EK has a terrible tendecy of punishing all of us for the mistake of few. And even though what they did to this girl was horrible and it does deserve to be reported… lers be practical, there is no way this article will help changing it for the better.

Please. Help the one of us who are staying and would like to have a choice in case the situation needs.

Hi, I’m the person who wrote this testimony and I would like to clarify the situation and repeat what I’ve already wrote in the email.
Option 1: getting married which wasn’t even an option because of personal reasons, the difficulty and precarity with maternity leave when a female crew has a child etc…
Option 2 : not keeping the baby which was a decision difficult enough to comment it further…
I swapped flights for days off, I had 5 days off in a row and an appointment in a proper clinic in my home country and the assurance that they’d only need to keep me for the day and that there will be no countraindication to go back to dubai a couple of days after and to be back on duty. I did not hide anything as I spoke to a professional doctor in Dubai in case I needed any medical check afterwards and as a matter of good faith and transparency. Some girls in this situation even get emergency leave to deal with it properly and come back as if nothing happened.
I made sure that it didn’t affect my work, I didn’t need to be absent on duty.
I didn’t get any pressure to abort it was my choice but I did get pressure to do it in Dubai and made clear that I wanted to do it in France properly and not in some sneaky way hidden in Dubai but they obviously didn’t want me to leave the UAE and that’s where management and accomodation security surveillance got involved, that’s where there is a problem for me. No matter what the law is and I don’t blame some doctors who are trying to help and put themselves in danger by doing so, the random way they deal with situations, for instance pregnancies where they sometimes give emergency leave right away whereas they tried to forbid me to leave on my days off ! That’s not normal, insanely controlling and made me regret that I have been honest and tried to do things properly. This is something that would NEVER happen in Europe and that will always seem crazy and unjustifiable to me…

Well, I’m not trying to change the topic….what she did is wrong and absolutely wrong and she admitted that….but lets face it, more than 78% of EK staff (not only CC) are doing that thing….right!!!

Besides, How many of you have seen prostitutes and streetwalkers in Dubai (with all my respect to all of you)!! So, the law is very clear when it comes to such cases and not active in downtown DXB!! Why don’t they deport those “apertures of corruption” at least, they are well known on the streets!!

I’m not trying to defend our colleague here as what she did is wrong but I guess, they should take care of other important things like what is happening behind the closed offices at least, once do it…it feels “good” and doesn’t hurt others meanwhile, once they closed the office door, they destroy other staff and make them suffer for the rest of their lives!!!

No my dear what I meant, it is wrong in terms of the contract and the country that she is working in otherwise, it is her decision and she is free to do whatever she wants.

I was just criticizing the way they look at it, they took only what they want and never care about a human with feelings and emotions at the end, they think that crew or staff in general should be on their feet 24 hours a day, to give and not to ask, to follow the rules that they wrote and in some cases, step on the same rules!

I want to send a message to EK management and to the relevant authority that a woman’s body is her own property and that she has to have a choice if she needs to make a decision regarding her body.

A company can not, under any circumstances, endanger a personal physical and psychological integrity of a woman.

A doctor or a manager can give a suggestion and offer help. NOBODY can force a woman to do an abortion under suspicious circumstances in the place where she doesn’t want to do it.

If EK wants to hire European girls and have an European image, they have to respect European cultural background in the same way their employees from all over the world respect theirs.

So, if it’s forbidden to get pregnant outside marriage, let the girl deal with it under her own terms, in Europe. RESPECT her body and her privacy. It’s not your body and you can not tell her what to do. You don’t own her, you didn’t hire her integrity, you just hired her professional skills.

Her intention was not to give a birth to a child in Dubai, outside marriage, so her intention was not to break the law.

Reading this website, I see what a dirty and filthy company EK truly is. Islam bans alcohol yet EK serve it and Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoom is the largest official importer of alcohol in the Gulf. Dubai Duty Free makes huge sales of alcohol and another haram product tobacco. I am so disgusted reading this website. Ek want to be seen as an amazing brand. Globally. So they must take the good with the bad. Hypocrisy racism entering private accommodation illegally not paying end of service benefit not honouring medical care forcing sick cc to travel to HQ to confirm they are sick are just a few of the indisputable facts of working for ek. Not to mention not having redress to labour law. What a vile and disgusting company.

Don’t surrender your rights to them as they are not their rights to take from you. Ek hate brand damage.and it’s happening. Big problems in pilot recruitment and retainment Huge numbers of cc resignations. Fatigued pilots and cc. Ek is on deep problems. Dubai Government needs every penny from ek as it has huge debts. What a disastrous place to work. Before you mention the “free” accommodation please tell us is it fireproof like The Address Hotel??

Oh my… I can’t believe that one European or an American STILL want to go and to live in UAE where being pregnant is illegal, and making a love is punishable. WTF?! People, please, be honest with yourselves, if you were born and if you live in normal and modern state ‘UAE’ ARE. NOT. FOR. YOU!!!

I wanted to apply, but after reading all this blog, and after hearing so many things about UAE – no way.
And of course, I can’t live and work somewhere and be slave.

UAE will never be modern and desirable place for an European or for people from modern and NORMAL countries.

Young lady, you didn’t do anything wrong. EK is a scam, third world rulers wouldn’t dare to treat European girls this way. This is Brits in a third world sanctuary fulfilling their colonial fantasies in modern world. UAE is just a staging area. I thought EK mistreats only Eastern European and South East Asian girls, but your story changed that theory. They played this trick on a French girl shows they buried their heads in the sand. Be brave and keep your head up. You probably helped/saved lot of girls. This empire is built upon the hard work of white girls from not so well economies. This party will end when no Caucasian girl joins this enterprise.

It doesn’t matter if the girl is European or Asian…they just don’t care. Is UAE.
I’m American and I had a familiar scenario like this one.
However, I never trusted Emirates. No matter how many times they encourage us to go to the clinic, to be honest, that supposedly gives “confidentiality” and that on these case they give us 2 options (marriage or be deported without the government knowing) although this is not what EK does. Is their laws and they can do whatever they want.

Working for EK is not peaches and cream and you cannot trust them.
This e-mail helps some Ek CC as an example if you’re pregnant and don’t want an abortion; Just pack your stuff and leave! No clinic, no managers. Leave.

Why would anyone trust the liars masquerading as managers? They lie as the speak. Utilise the lack of a legal system for EK staff in the UAE, cheat, threaten and bully. Hala Mansoor actually punched one of her cabin crew. Never trust EK as an employer. You have been warned.
