Resignation of one cabin crew

When I read this letter I felt really proud of this girl. Integrity is a rare characteristic in this world of greedy and senseless people.

Never let anyone convince you that you are not worthy enough.

Emirates:

I was first called into the “Office” of my Manager after an incident occurred on board one of my flights. I say “Office” because the joke was, he didn’t actually have one. I found myself on several occasions having meetings with him either in Costa Coffee in EGHQ or in the Crew Standby Lounge. So much for privacy. Not to mention on one occasion, I was actually called in to see him by my staff number. (Yes, I was called by my staff number, not my name.)

My manager, Ram Murphy, had a reputation for disliking all his female crew and having an amazingly positive relationship with all his male crew.

Ram liked to show off and give the impression that he knew what was going on and that he had everything under control. Truth was, he knew very little and was lazy and incompetent. He made it look like he was caring and understanding of your needs by smiling, over gesturing and speaking a lot but saying nothing at all, when, in reality, he couldn’t care less about how you were spoken to on board by a senior or how hard you were trying to be “Star of the Month.” (Nujum) Many times he would randomly start speaking about Etihad and Qatar, how they were our competition (as if I didn’t know) and he always told me to keep “wowing” passengers with my five star smile. In fact, he mentioned the latter to many girls who went to him for meetings and spoke enthusiastically about their physical appearances.

Upon being called in to speak to him, he would always ask for “my version of what happened” this in itself would wind me up. Not only was I already in trouble for speaking up for myself, but many managers have already taken the Senior Members’ word for what happened and they’re on their side no matter what, regardless of what you say. So I always wondered why I had even been called into the office in the first place. It was obviously just scare mongering and an attempt to intimidate me further. If the Senior can’t intimidate you on board, then they will make sure your manager sees to it.

Ram also liked to speak about “perceptions” and how I said things “in the wrong way”. Now, don’t get me wrong, I think I know how to speak to people by now. Before EK hired me, I had worked for another European Airline for two years and worked as a Teacher, so telling me I don’t know how to express myself correctly is pretty offensive, in my opinion. What the problem with Seniors is, when they say something to you, as in, when they’re giving you what they call “constructive criticism” you MUST agree with it. The ridiculous thing about this is, most of the criticism wasn’t even constructive in the first place and I was constantly being spoken down to like I was a child or an animal. Something which, as a fully grown, educated adult, I will not tolerate from anyone. Especially someone who I just met in the briefing room an hour before the flight. One thing a lot of seniors and managers liked to say is “it’s not my opinion on you, it’s an observation” which, in time, I came to disagree with because you might well observe a lot of me, other crew on board and how we behave and do our job, but one thing I know for sure is, when negative things are consistently written for little or no reason, it’s no longer an observation, it’s an opinion. A forced opinion.

Truth is, seniors on board are under immense pressure by their own managers to report and spot errors in as many crew as possible. Their excuse for this type of discipline is: “no crew member is perfect.” Understandable, but no human being is perfect, are they? So to me, this is an utterly pathetic excuse to use for why seniors and managers must consistently knock hard working crew down, intimidate and bully them until they snap. Until they have to come in and see their managers who then feed them the infamous line “If you’re not happy, then resign

It’s one big domino effect. Managers pressurise Seniors, who then pass on that pressure to their crew on board, who then feel so overwhelmed by that pressure, they end up collapsing. Crew by this point are no longer able to perform at their best, they’re exhausted by the negativity and constant lack of support. When crew then stop performing well on board and not trying their best, the seniors have more negative comments to write on their flight reviews, which the Cabin Crew Managers then call that crew member in for. So the viscous circle continues, until the crew member resigns.

The way I heard some Seniors speak to other crew was shocking for me. I’m fully aware no job is perfect and that there will always be someone who disagrees with you, but this wasn’t one or two people trying to cause trouble here and there. This was a daily occurrence on almost every flight. A regular pattern of consistent brainwashing. If it wasn’t me, it was somebody else on the receiving end of a Senior’s insecurity or fear. A Senior’s fear that, if all the crew on board that flight were well behaved and hard working, they wouldn’t fulfill their own Manager’s dream of having “no perfect crew”, which usually resulted in that Senior getting into trouble. So, in order to save their own backs, they had to taint as many crew as possible.

There were crew on board who I flew with who had been Doctors, Nurses, Teachers and Lawyers back in their home countries. People who came from highly educated backgrounds doing this job for various reasons, whether it was for the experience, the challenge, travel, career breaks etc… All at some point, being subjected to this mental bullying, brainwashing and belittling. All in the name of pretentious Emirates, who think being the best means you have to give up your rights to be treated like a human being.

I remember the flight when I finally snapped and decided that I was done with this ludicrous system of discipline. It started when the Purser decided he wanted to question me on religion, a big no-go area when it comes to topics to discuss on board. Now, I’m sure there are people who will be reading this and thinking “What’s the problem with asking that?” but for people who haven’t worked in this company, EK strongly advise crew to avoid any conversations on board regarding Religion, Sex or Politics…which is perfectly understandable considering that you work with at least seven (sometimes more) different nationalities at a time on one flight alone.

He asked me where I got my Muslim surname from (I’m of mixed heritage but I do not follow any religion of my own, I made this crystal clear on my application form when I applied) and if I was a Muslim or if I believed in God. I simply answered that I didn’t follow any religion and that this wasn’t the best conversation to have while at work and within earshot of passengers. He then had the nerve to ask me “Why are you not a Muslim?” I told him he had no right to question me about my, or anyone else’s religion on board and that the conversation was over. This backfired and made him furious because of the fact that I had stood up for myself and answered him back, which no doubt he wasn’t expecting me to do, nor was he intimidating me like he had hoped. The Purser was literally shaking with rage by this point. To ask someone “Why are you not a Muslim?” or of any other religion for that matter, is as offensive as asking someone about the colour of their skin. It’s unacceptable and I was having none of it.

The dye was cast from that moment onwards and he decided to make my life very difficult for the rest of the flight. He obviously told the other Senior what had happened because he also started to bully and pick at every little thing which I did wrong. Upon arrival into Dubai I was shown my flight review and told that my Manager would be notified of my “unacceptable” behaviour on board. Basically, I was being sent to see my manager because I didn’t want to speak about Religion on board. (Something crew were advised not to speak about in the first place)

I made the decision there and then that when I went in to see Ram, he’d be receiving my resignation as well. Enough was enough. I was done and dusted with trying to be the best I could be and getting nowhere,  or getting no recognition for my back breaking work and having people speak down to me, just because they have the power to have you sacked for nothing.

In the year and a half in which I had been flying, I had had NO sick days or missed flights and yet, funnily enough, Ram hadn’t noticed that. I had NO complaints from passengers, either. What he had noticed, however, was that although I did my JOB properly, never broke protocol or breached security, I was deemed as having an attitude because I refused to let Seniors speak to me disrespectfully. I refused to be consistently harassed on board. This behaviour from the Purser and Senior WAS harassment. And it wasn’t the first time I had been on the receiving end of it, nor was it the first time for many of my other colleagues who had experienced the same bullying, but were too scared to say anything in case they got reported to their managers. This kind of provoking always resulted in me speaking up on board but always ending up in HQ speaking to Ram Murphy.

Many a time I’d arrive at HQ to be met by his assistant, or whoever he could get on the day to go through the previous flight’s dramas with me. If Ram could get someone to do his dirty work, he would. He loved the status and no doubt the salary of a Manager but not the work load and responsibilities which came with it.

As soon I sat down, I handed him my resignation letter and said that I refused to speak about the pathetic “situation” which had happened on my previous flight. I didn’t want to hear another fake, lying word come from his mouth. These EK Managers, along with many Pursers and Seniors are so brainwashed they are incapable of thinking rationally. You can’t reason with a brainwashed person and I had finally come to the conclusion that I was no longer going to waste my time or energy trying to do so.

He took my resignation and asked me if I thought I was doing the right thing. Suddenly, he was interested. I said I was 100% sure and nothing he or anyone else said would change that. And with that, I walked out of the Crew Standby Lounge he was using as his office that day, and never looked back.

Post Emirates:

I’d like to add to anyone reading this blog who is current crew working for EK, who has been in a similar situation before, that you are not alone and it’s not your fault! This company will make anything your fault and make you out to be the bad guy all the time, there is no winning, unless you’re one of the bullies yourself. Many of my friends are still out there working for them and in all honesty, I don’t recognise them anymore. I feel like I’ve lost them to Emirates, like they’ve been kidnapped and have very little chance of being released back into the real world.

Today, not only am I earning more and doing less, I work normal hours with great people and I have time to socialise, keep up with friends, family and hobbies. All without having to watch my back. My happiness and confidence have soared and I finally feel like I’m myself again. I’m my own person, with strengths and weaknesses and I don’t have to feel guilty about it anymore. EK really knocked my self-esteem and I can now see why they hire people so young. (and have stopped hiring 30+) It’s so they can continue with their nasty, backward ways and be more comfortable knowing a 21 year old probably won’t question what they’re doing or know any different.

Sounds very familiar. Thank you for telling it like it is. One one absurd occasion, I had a senior give me a bad flight review, maybe because the ‘pretty’ girl on the flight was nice to me not him… He was just waiting to nail me for something…hahahahah. After TOD (Top of Descent) he showed me the flight review which is completely inappropriate considering that we were all busy securing the cabin and galley. He asked me, “Do you accept?” to which I replied “Do I have a choice?” He was furious and ran off to daddy purser.

This is the perfect example of how this company is totally rotten from the inside-out. Flight Review, on top of descent, when you have no time to actually sit down and go through point by point with a manager you only met 3hours before…

It’s the same in most airlines I guess, I spent 6 years in SQ and I can totally relate to everything that is mentioned here. The most common things we hear from our management side is that we are “just numbers” (easily replaceable) and that nobody forced us to join the airline. And it’s true that the airline does have a crazily high rate of bullying at work, it’s really a sad job..

I can already figure out that this Purser himself was a Muslim… most likely from Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco. Why can I make such gross assumptions? Because I am a senior with EK, and whenever I or my friends (we are both western females) encounter issues with our purser, it’s always because they are Muslim males and we have challenged them in some way, and they don’t like women telling them what to do. It’s a really, really sad generalization and I sometimes feel guilty about it, but it just keeps proving itself true. In fact, my friend (before she was a senior) was a very outspoken crew and seemed to always butt heads with seniors with this profile. I never believed it (I tend to keep my mouth shut onboard) until I became a senior and started having to fight for my work rights. Thanks for this crew for sharing, it’s something I’m currently fighting with as I’ve become a new senior onboard and find myself in pain from biting my tongue so much….

I’m a Muslim myself. An Asian Muslim. Moving to Dubai, I experienced culture shock and most of what they do contradicts every teachings of Islam I’ve been taught growing up. These Egyptian, Lebanese and Moroccan seniors are the worst to deal with. Just because I’m also a Muslim, they think it’s ok to talk religion with me. It’s still inappropriate and they wouldn’t let it go.

Totally agree, those so called “muslems” indeed being party animals getting wasted nd laid on layovers and days off, get mad when a western female is being assertive and dares to express her oppinion and argue with them. İt concerns even junior crew, so no need to say about a cabin senior or manager who can abuse their position in order to show u “ur place”. Speak out guys and don t be afraid to lose a job that makes u feel depressed harassed and abused.

Ram. What a slithery little SH1T you are. I thought you had left EK but there again somebody like you is unemployable outside of EK. You treated me and others like dirt when we were there. I messaged a friend to tell her about this link. Lo and behold she said that you had been seen trying to push your way in front of other crew who had been waiting for hours to be seen by the doctor in walk in clinic the yesterday. Looks like you were told to F off and to wait your turn like the others. Your disdain for crew and those poor souls who have you as their “manager” is plain to see. I hope your MCC reads this and disciplines you. But of course that won’t happen as it is EK. You are a sad excuse for a “manager”

It’s because lower and middle management are good at licking the fat arses of everyone in upper management. How do you think they got the job in the first place? I’m not generalising. This is only unique to Emirates! Everyone is going for the stupid najeem (or whatever it’s called) the wrong way, by stabbing colleagues in the back, kissing arses and worst of all – kissing arses!!!
Kudos to this crew for not letting abuse get the better of her. You sound like you have a good head on your shoulders and I’ve flown with a lot of crew as intelligent as yourself. I hope more crew will read this and follow your example. Not to resign but to not let these daily abuses go unnoticed by standing up for themselves without the fear of any repercussions. I applaud you! You’re a champion.

I had exactly the Same experience and to some degree we still do at Qantas. Perhaps the joining together of these 2 airlines was more about copying each others style.. I don’t think qantas could come up with an exact copy of this scenario on their own.. Sad to see it is still happening and that creeper putting up with it. Take a stand people, support each other and take the bullies down. You can do it !!

I’m former Etihad crew, and it was the same there too. That was the reason I’ve resigned. I had encountered bullying and hard oppression only because I was european, mainly from asian or arabic male crew. I’ve never said this to no one because I knew no one would believe me or it would be turned against me..

I don’t fly with any pursers because I am a purser myself, and I am shocked to hear how other pursers treat their teams. It makes me angry! Dear resigned crew, this should never have happened to you! I’m glad you are happy now. Don’t look back!

That is a terrible thing to say, and not very nice or thoughtful at all. Whose business is it if you are of a certain religion or not? You know full well why she refused, and she even stated it herself; it was REQUIRED of her JOB not to take part of conversations on board that consisted of religion, sex/sexuality, or politics. These topics are HIGHLY sensitive, and by no means are necessary to partake in, as many people do not accept others’ opinions, or find their individuality offencive, for some ridiculous reason.
I dare say, that you would hate to have someone question your personal beliefs and opinions because they were outraged that YOU didn’t follow what THEY believed in. Good on her! That man was an inconsiderate, and nosy prick, that had no right to embarrass and harass her.
I do hope that you don’t find yourself in the same position. It is incredibly uncomfortable and hurtful to have someone judge you, and force you to disclose information that you do not feel comfortable talking about.

I have the same feeling when it comes to the purser story, oversensitive to religious issues. I do not find talking/asking about religion to be “bullying”. Many times we had discussion with other crew on the subject and it was interesting. There is a possibility the purser was just curious and wanted to discuss.

This is probably not the matter of the very question (although it is inappropriate and undesirable on board EK flights especially) but of the tone it was asked with. It is very known that only 10% of communication is verbal, 90% are non verbal signs which we react to.

Fortunately I escaped this company last summer. I’ve flown for many years within Europe and thoroughly enjoyed it. 3 years at EK was more than enough. Absolute hideous culture onboard, it is not real flying. Most crew enjoy their time onboard and will chat genuinely with passengers. The pressure and stress presented to you as crew by EK casts a very dark cloud over the job. I can count on my hands the number of flights that reminded me of my previous airline; enjoyable and pleasant. There’s absolutely no sentimental value for the crew unfortunately, most management have little or no respect for the crew. It could be an amazing airline… I don’t understand how it’s one of the top airlines as service is generally very slow and due to the high turnoverr, crew are very inexperienced. Give me BA or another European flag carrier any day. I left as I felt myself becoming anxious and negative and I didn’t want this company in anyway to change the person I am. I left on a whim, and can say I’ve never been happier. I landed a great job, I earn very good money, I have a life, a routine and my relationships are stronger. If you love flying then continue as it is an amazing career and totally addictive, but go for another airline. I have no vendetta against this airline, I find it fascinating how well it’s doing and am proud to have worked for a successful company. I’m just venting my experience and feelings, before I get told I’m bitter etc, because it is not the case.

I’ve been a crew for several years with EK and recently I resigned not for the hate but I chose to take care of my family. I say we all encounter different ups and downs up there. The religion incident is somehow below the belt and I’ve experienced these my self. not about religion though… sometimes about gender issues and most of the time just mere arrogance and ignorance.. many times. But despite that, I still enjoyed flying. I shook it off my shoulder, every time. Ram used to be my manager and he’s nothing but supportive not just to me but to all of my batch mates too… and BTW i’m a girl. I’m so surprised that a lot of people here are just so ready to hate and bash other people.

I had my moments when i was called in to the management office to answer to some incidents onboard be it my fault or my senior or even the passenger … and believe me I’ve experienced all three, again I shook it off. And yes, they ALWAYS! ask us about our version of events but i took it as an opportunity to defend myself and be heard. I found it procedural, nothing personal.

I always find reading the posts in this blog very informative, often times shocking, and amusing since i was once part of this company. I couldn’t resist but to respond to this post as I not only was a crew but also Ram used to be my manager for 3 long years.

I say, being a crew is like a delicacy. It’s an acquired taste.

And there’s always the OTHER side of the story.

I’m not Indian or any sort of that descent. Your statement relating my name to Ram and his nationality is sad. Coz we are not talking about nationality nor race here. One thing I’ve learned from flying was never to assume. That’s when we get into trouble. Also, that’s not my name as we all don’t reveal our identities here. But anyways, we could always agree to disagree. I had a good experience with Ram being my manager, so I voiced out my opinion. Ah, EK. Can’t believe I wasted 4 years putting up with their shit. I had some good moments there, made some life long friends, but lost interest in doing my job properly after being unfairly treated by seniors and the company. I wonder if upper management would do anything if they really knew what kind of politics took place on onboard, or whether they’re also part of the problem.

I started to have anxiety issues towards the end of my time there and my manager called me to her “office” (a cubicle in a sea of cabin crew managers) and also pulled the “you can always resign” card on me, at which point I did, and after a few months back home I was back to normal health. I know of crew who have changed airlines and are not only so much happier where they are now, but are shocked at how much they enjoy working in aviation due to the bad taste Emirates left in their mouth. I encourage anyone who is considering leaving to do so, for your own health and wellbeing, and to feel respected.

I really wish one day all crew could coordinate to “press 2”, just so the company can get it through their thick skulls how important cabin crew are to the company, but alas, that’s the joys of working in a country where protesting is illegal. With the amount of crew fatigue, and corners that are cut, it’s a wonder how they keep their planes in the sky.

To be fair, there were some good people I worked with who were in senior roles, but they were unfortunately in the minority. I understand the need for respecting a chain of command, but if incompetent people are in charge who abuse their power, the whole idea falls apart. When an entire complement of cabin crew are unhappy with a senior onboard and attempt to escalate the issues further, but management decides to treat what ONE person says as gospel and disregard the opinion of everyone else because they’re a lower grade, there is something wrong with the people who are getting promoted.

I now work in retail, make more than I did when I was with Emirates, and have managers who genuinely seem concerned about my wellbeing. I do miss the travel, but don’t miss supporting the UAE/Emirates slave machine.

It seems that Emirates Airline nurtures disposable staff policy on purpose. Not openly and not officially, but if your “best before” is expired (usually couple of years), you will get the famous “you can always resign” line, as they don’t need you anymore. Will write another article on that soon.

everything is so true, how she tell everyone what actually happened inside EK.
I was one of their staff no.tool, I worked with EK for 5.5 years, the only reason that I could stay longer than I thought was all of my good friends.
Before I joined EK,this is the airline that I always wanted to work for, after my dream was full filled. Facing the reality working in EK with all the hard work, high work load, high pressure from company and seniors from most of every flight were ridiculous!!!
I rarely “press2” but once I was in extremely fatigue due to operate over night flights continuously for 2 months, last flight before my leave was day flight… I could not sleep more than 36 hrs. In my mind I didn’t want to call sick at all because I knew what’s the consequence “AB” straight away what ever reason you have… Honestly I was frightened thinking be in the office trying to beg them to understand the fact… Finally I decided to “press 2” because I didn’t want to be compromised to safety of everyone from me. but Evita didn’t let me through so keep repeating. At the end I was late for reporting sick….Crew Control picked up on the other after the Evita keep repeating that “if you report sick you will be mark Absent” “To accept press1” “To cancel press2”. Crew control was blamed me that I report sick late even try to explain she didn’t listen at all. I challenge her to check my phone records that I was trying early before. She refuse, she keep repeating that if you all sick you will be mark AB before my leave and you will have warning letter!!!! More than 5 times… And she tried to push me to go on the flight!!!!! Seariously!!!!!! After I told her fatigue!!!! At the end I told her “you can mark me Absent”

This is an example…that I realized… I’m just a very very tiny part of the money maker machine….they don’t care about you….no matter how great you are,, you never good enough for them unless pick your bags and go to the E-gate…

I’m very happy after I resign 4 months ago.. I got all my life back and still flying for an Airline… I’m home…

  • THANKYOU!!

I sincerely congratulate you for speaking your mind and applaud you for keeping your integrity. I have had conversations onboard with other crew about religion – we are not meant to, but sometimes you DO find crew who know how to talk about sensitive subjects – and they can be some of the most interesting and rewarding conversations.

I think they do truly try to brainwash us and mold us into their own little puppets at training college. And let’s be honest – we are aware of it then. We know what they’re doing, but at this time our ambitious minds care nothing for it, we’ll do whatever it takes to be one of the “lucky girls” in the red hat, to travel the world at their expense and we’ll put up with it because it’s “worth it”. That honeymoon period ends very quickly with the bullying we receive – but it’s up to you whether you accept it or not. For me, I still take it. I’m still here and I won’t let it break me (just yet!) because I’m not done with seeing the world. I’ll give them what they want for now and when I’ve had my fill and I’m ready to shine I’ll say goodbye and continue with my life. But for now, I’ll swallow my pride.

    • The only thing I think is missing from this post is the SEXUAL harassment we receive from seniors. Don’t flirt back with your SFS???? 1 on a flight review… for ….. whatever made up reason he sees fit.

I totally agree on everything. I have resigned from EY, due to same reasons, but definitely could top that. Bullying on a daily base. Wrong People in wrong positions. Many Ex-Collegoues just stay, cuz they have to feed their family at home. I was so overworked, that I got seriously sick.

Since I am back home, I am super happy.

Dragana (or whoever).. Sour grapes for you, maybe!?

Having worked for a few airlines myself and now with EK, I can comfortably say that EK still is the best to work for in the industry. Also, it is rather difficult to get fired from Emirates because it tolerates the staff a lot. I agree, certain aspects of management must change, then again where do you find perfection?

If you chose to quit, be happy wherever you are and all the best to you. But do not make it horrible to others (with such cheap posts) who are happy here. Your actions are purely “vindictiveness”!

Also, you display your level of class with this very action and I’m not surprised you had trouble with managers and seniors whilst you are here.

Do yourself a favor: change your attitude this new year. Be a good girl. Be good to yourself ……and fly Emirates (someday!). 🙂

Do you think that EK management displayed a “level of class” when they wanted to put me in prison?

They crossed the line first. Up until that point I was a “good girl” using common reason and communication with them. After that I went home and continued to write a blog.

Seems like everyone forgets that these managers want to imprison their employees for using legal means to fight for their rights.

Did you forget that part or you just love to fly Emirates too much?

I am glad that you are happy. Please, continue to be happy. There are people who are not happy as you are. Do you ever think of them?

        Dragana,

Im in no position to feel the frustration you might be feeling and those feelings are completely respected!
I’m not writting these to prove you wrong, therefore I have also clearly outlined that “Certain Aspects” of EK management style at crew department (surely at other departments too) could change for the better.

We have to understand, EK is not forcing anybody to come down to Dubai or remain in Dubai. We all choose and come down here for one main reason…that being a good life style and a tax free salary (Take home amount) where we save a bit more end of the day than most would do in our home countries. Now, don’t go on saying this isn’t true, coz that’s the fact irrespective of wherever u come from.

Some ungrateful fraction of staff prefer to project this benift differently and I often ask this question as to ” Why the hell are you in Dubai/Emirates” if you are better off in your own turf!?

I’m certainly not Ab-initio Crew and very very far from that level. I like to be factual in my reply than just writting for the sake of it like most have expressed here. Fact is, we have to understand, it is what it is here. Rules are to be followed and obbeyed or if unhappy pack up and leave….as simple as that.

Always remember the famouse saying: “when u are in rome, do as Romans do”!

I want you to know, I genuinely feel (to some extent) the sadness and frustration you feel. I also know your post will send a shockwaves across the department and hopefully a few eyes and ears will open up. Weldone you for that.

If I were you, I wouldn’t go about it in this manner. I would raise my concerns direct with the people concerned in writting. This is why there is a department called “HR”. Furthermore a body called “Labour department”.

It is unfortunate, some of us forget where to get right help from, instead lean towards tools such as “WordPress”. What good would this really do end of the day??

You didn’t read the whole blog. I turned to HR with the complaint on work harassment, they didn’t even respond. I went to Ministry of Labour and Residence Directorate and nobody is designated to deal with complaints on Emirates, They are above every law, Blog was last my resource.

Tax free salary and better lifestyle are long gone in EK. Only thing left is exploitation. You are led to believe at your recruitment that it will be better, but it turns out that you will lose your health and positive attitude once you get minced in that machine for making money. Your contract will be violated and you will be bullied and there would be no one to give you back your rights as EK is above the law. “Take it or leave it” becomes a blackmail then, as you don’t know that your contract will be breached and that you will be forced to put up with it or resign.

This doesn’t sound like a choice to me anymore. It sounds like system which lures people with promises and then abuses their health and good will. System which exploits people who had to leave their own countries in order to survive. It’s very, very sad.

So, if your salary is 26.000 AED it means that simple middle managers’ salary is around 35.000 AED which is 10 times more than salary of the ground staff. What is your opinion on that? Do you think it’s fair? Please provide us with your reaction on this, let’s hear your solutions on problems presented here, not just subjective and wrong claims without evidence.

You, the trolling CCMs should address why thousands of crew are leaving instead of cheap plants like this.

Firstly, I’m NOT a CCM and I do not agree with certain practices and actions taken by the CC department.

What I am is ALL what YOU are NOT.

I’m greatfull for the opportunity given to me and I’m content at Emirates (I admit I could be happier). I would like to state I’m also not a sucker for emirates by any means either.

With regards to EOSB, pls refer to company policy we all signed when we joined. If fired, and proven giulty at a seriouse level as per countries laws, then you obviously loose EOSB.

Staff turnover is very common in this industry and in this part of the world. Especially where young folks join for a few years to see the world, have a good time, mourn and complain like you do. Needless to say some get fired for gross misconduct and some also leave when they are not happy. It’s part of the business.

If we are blind to these facts and go with the flow and just complain coz it’s the trend…..well, I’m sorry for you. Instead how about pull up your socks and give your best towards your job? How about not forgetting what you said you wanted to “do and be” at your first interview?

Ask yourself this question. Answer it truthfully (no need to write it here).
“ARE YOU BETTER OFF IF YOU WENT HOME”?????

I bet my boots, you are NOT!

          Dear Sean,
It is clear that you are happy, which is great, but you are missing certain points.
Staff turnover as it is nowdays IS NOT common. It never was so huge as it is nowdays, so obviously something went wrong in recent past. I do not claim that things were perfect before and they suddenly became horrible. Truth is in between.
Things were ok before and now they are not so much. There are still some good things to hold on to, otherwise no one would be there any more, but there are deffinitely many shortfalls in companys recent past, which made so many more employees unhappy and it shows in number of resignations in past few months. It is not just a trend, as you stated.
It is ok to oppose someones oppinion but do not ignore obvious facts.
People do resign in such a huge number. Yes they chose once to move in tax free country, travel the world and earn some money, but all that becomes less important when there is no apriciation for what you do, when you are coming back from work demorallised, then travelling the world becomes less important.
Don’t forget that life in Dubai now is way more expencive then it probably was when you came first, so money earned by new commers now is way less when is comes to lifestyle you are talking about. Nice lifestyle in Dubai has higher price then couple of years before. Everything is pricy, from ordinary food in a restaurant to transportation aroud city (which is a huge city) and you have to agree on that.
When you come from less fortunate part of the world you can still cope, cut on some expencies and save, but if you are from Europe, Australia or North America, you would probably put your income and expencies on paper and soon come to conclusion that it is just not worht being away from home and saving almost nothing.
That is why so many new joiners from western countries leave in first few years of employment (some even in first few months).
Good luck and enjoy what you do, but open your eyes and ears bit more, you might get suprised what you find out.

Sean, why don’t you tell us your position and grade in EK? You sound like exactly like an HR manager with a lot of excuses for their failures.

Bigger staff turnover maybe common in airline industry, especially in cabin crew, but not because of the abuse, exploitation, tiredness and bullying (all reasons why cc resign in EK), but because of the health consequences and fatigue that cabin crew job inevitably brings. You can comfort yourself that it is usual, but you you are molesting your employees and you are lying to yourself that it is usual.

It’s a common human psychological mechanism: you find acceptable excuses for your failures and you continue to comfort yourself that it’s all normal. In the meantime, your selfishness and lack of ability to face the reality (I love the nickname of the commenter named “reality”) damage thousands of people and the company.

Imagine when we ARE better home, were we have free time to do what we like and we are nobody’s property, than to be in Dubai and earn large bonuses for others, being under appreciated, treated like numbers, bullied by insecure and incompetent people and having almost no free time for ourselves at all.

Time of slavery is long gone. Why should you give best to your job when it is only going to be abused for someone else’s profit? This kind of inhumane capitalism can not survive. It is meant to exploit all the resources and die. Individuals will get rich and die, leaving devastation after them. Rest of the people will live miserable lives and die. Leaving nothing after them.

How come you can remember what you told your recruiter at the job interview, but you can’t remember that your are part of the whole and with this “take it or leave it” and “I don’t care, I am happy, who is not happy may fu-k off home” you just look at your own benefit?

All the managers are behaving exactly like you have just described: selfish little people, incapable to be aware of their responsibility in larger scale of matters, finding excuses and rationalisations for their failures.

Thank you for your comment. It proves many points on this blog.

Anyway, everyone, we can’t know the percentage of nationalities in different positions in EK, and being an Indian or Muslim certainly doesn’t play the part here. Organizational culture, negative selection of superiors, non-consistent procedures and mishandled cultural differences do play a part here, so let’s stick to that.

  • Outside perspective

I am not an EK CC, but share an apartment with one (who is a purser). From an outsider perspective looking in, I firstly got the impression that Emirates isn’t an employer of goodwill, but rather an ’employer through fear’. So many of the CC I have met feel aggrieved by the ill conceived logic of the CC managers. Many Of the managers are viewed as uncaring, incompetent, sexist, harassing and devoid of the CC core competencies / challenges (many ex CC managers having forgotten the their roots!!).

However, this said, I also hear of so many Seniors who have no idea how to run their cabin, or just want to order people around without pulling their weight. Likewise, many appear not to have worked a suitable period to justify their promotion. This is ever more exacerbated by new Pursers having never worked in a First Class cabin. How can service delivery quality possibly be maintained?!?! Likewise, no wonder they spend their time picking on others as this is usually a reflection of their own incompetancy.

    May I make a suggestion Emirates…

    1. All CC managers should work ‘standby’ for one month every six. Then they would be fully conversant with current operating levels, standards and issues at hand. This would level the playing field for them instantly. If CC Management can’t take on a flight, then they shouldn’t be allowed to manage CC. LEAD FROM THE FRONT!
    2. Spend more time reviewing Promotion candidates BEFORE you give them the responsibility!. If they aren’t good enough to pass their training, don’t pass them. I hear so much about how many Business, 1st, SFS and Pursers ‘scrape through training’ when they should be failed. Either extend training, or fail them. This way you are truly focussed on the ‘Customer Experience’

    3. Make the effort to investigate grosse misconduct at all levels. Sexism, racism, bullying and the likes are not acceptable in ANY civilised organisation, especially one as renowned as Emirates. There IS value to retaining these long serving staff, as they bring experience. If you don’t support them and demoralise them, you will have the huge attrition rates you have and poor customers like myself have to put up with second rate service from newbies, or demoralised CC.

We’re Emirates to adopt some of these suggestions, they could then clearly weed out the rude and incompetent CC (yes there are plenty of them) and retain the quality they deserve. I’ll say it again… It’s about the ‘Customer Experience’!!!!

I was one of the crew when this all story the ex crew told but I’m sorry she is not telling the true story . Story started when frist officer told us there is no profit shares for that year on our way back to dubai most of the crew were making fun but that lady had a very serious sad face which made the purser asked her if everything is ok and she replied I’m ok (even captain noticed and asked us in the bus to smile ) after take off the sfs (not muslim or even an arabic ) asked that crew if she can smile while she is doind the service she told him in front of all of us to fuck off then she left then he followed her and as he told us she said the same word for him again then he went to the purser after that that lady and sfs went to the purser and as she told us after she came back that purser gave her the choice either she smile and show respect to her sfs or he will deadhead her and she chose to work . And last word that what I witnessed and this what happed in front of my eyes and I’ve a another flight with this purser and I asked him what happened he informed me that she accused him with all what she mentioned here and hr has nothing to do in the whole story she misbehaved with her cabin senior and used abusive words which is not acceptable and he added that he was told that she was pushed to resign

I am en ex cabin crew of Emirates and flew with them back in 1996 for one year. Quite actually I enjoyed my year in Dubai very much and Emirates was an employer like any. I am white European and never faced any bullying. Perhaps I did not take any notice or needed to take any notice since flew only the planned one year (year off from Uni) and did not really meet the same crew another time.

I find it sorry to hear how a young person has been traumatised by a company culture. I myself work for a giant multinational company and my building of 2000 people is full of Ram type of persons. What Ram does is just climbing the corporate ladder and has made the right friends on higher level. One must understand that in the hard competitive corporate world an employee only makes career having the right sponsors in higher management. Having many representatives of one’s one cultural background also helps. I help you and you help me takes one far. Also management likes having same minded persons around them. Nobody likes working with hard to handle people. It is sad to see how once so shy and humble Ram turns into a self confident corporate ass and the higher he climbs the less he needs to take any interest of the ones on a lower ranked position and the more he licks the right back sides.

What is the purpose of this post of mine. Unless you run your own company you have a big risk of being surrounded by Ram’s. When you are young and the whole career ahead of you and you feel unhappy at work you should seek another employer. Once you are middle aged with family you don’t leave the corporate anymore. It is not called brain washed. It is called supporting the family and not caring about other things than the paycheck, comfortable distance to work, holiday entitlement, health care and pension plan.

Whenever I meet a Ram these days you just take the higher road and reply with the largest smile and reply with bla bla answers including the word safety…. Nobody can argue safety.
Is it really worth giving another thought to the Ram’s of this world? There will always be another Ram in your life if you start fighting the corporate cultures. Corporates make their people not the other way around.

Would be interesting to fly Emirates again. Last time was a passanger 10 years ago.

I have read a large chunk of this article and comments, and it’s very interesting. I work with a bank and I can tell you that this kind of work pressure is everywhere, where you have senior management with dinosaur ego and they get away with it. Junior staff are treated like they are nothing. This is called discipline. And this is why Emirates is one of the best airline in the world, and why they make ridiculous profit. As much as I hate this culture you just have to comply to keep your job. Senior management can be stupid motherfuckin dogs though

    Like

    • admindragana

O, no, Stanley, it’s not called discipline and Emirates just have the image of the best airline in the world. Service quality is way behind this title.

I do agree though that capitalism needs stupid and incompetent but ruthless people to gain short term profit (for couple of decades). After some time everything starts to fall apart because resources are gone. No more bonuses and benefits.

I would like that this blog stays online and witness the future where EK and all the companies that are “successful” now just vanish like they never existed before. Greed is like a fire. Play with it long enough and it will burn you to the ground.

Funny thing is: individuals will still get rich and nobody will be responsible for company’s failure as nobody will remember bunch of average and under average top managers who collected the money and went home, died.

Bottom line is that this blog helps Dubai Government to change their policies and implement some sustainable business plans before their land and resources are used, demolished and left behind. The first thing they should do is to do business with people who are aware of the broader perspective of life and who do take responsibility for others. They should cooperate with decent human beings not with bunch of lousy “managers” who couldn’t find jobs in their home countries so they came to UAE to live their selfish dream lives while people around them suffer.

UAE rulers should know that amount of money that they are getting now is not a proof of success when your natural and human resources are abused. Less costs more. Now you have money and you think you are successful, tomorrow you will have nothing because you used all that you had and you didn’t have a plan how to preserve yourself while others just abused you and left once you had nothing to offer them anymore.

According to. My previous reply i wanted to say im Egyptian german muslim sfs resigning soon cause of treatment of purser to me and to other crew and management as well which is everything going in unfair way and I’m a purser who believe that fairness is the rule of the world and EMIRATES is unfair people even to them selves , my experience is from everywhere there is good and bad people , good Egyptians and bad Egyptians , good black people and bad black people , good asians and bad asians , not everyone is same , if you smart enough or grown up enough you would never call it by color or religion or country or continents !

Wow, reading this has brought back many memories. I did a year with Emirates in 2006. I remember when I finally resigned Ram also asked me if I was 100% sure, such a shame to lose good crew. Too bad I never felt valued for my hard work.

I remember on one flight after arriving in Sydney, the purser sat us down in the hotel lobby and gave us economy crew a slamming. The sfs had gone running to the purser, before any of us had had a chance, about some disagreement . No need to hear our side of the story. It was seniors word over ours. Here we were sitting in the hotel lobby, in our uniforms, being reduced to tears. How professional this must have looked to outsiders.

The last straw was on a flight on the old 310, the purser claimed he was unwell on the bus out to the aircraft prior to boarding. Umm, what about fitness for duty? So he proceeds to sit himself in the business section for the entire flight, seat back and legs up, eyes closed. Then has a go at me for disturbing his sleep while doing service. We thankfully had an awesome australian sfs on the flight who reported the matter to his crew manager. However I doubt any disciplinary action would have ever be taken as it would be pursers word over sfs.

I was always so frustrated to be working with seniors that did not have the skills and suitability for the role, for whom I had no respect. I was always told that australian crew were disliked because they tended to be more vocal and stand up.

people who last in EK have put their self value n pride on the floor n allowed management n seniors walk ALL OVER IT many many times… This I guarantee!

There was only so much I could take before I felt like slashing my managers car tires and smearing dog shit all over his car.x EK too and my manager and many SFSs were total assholes. infamous line “are you arguing with me???” no u dumb bitch im explaining the situation.

Such a mentally unhealthy work environment.

there were many prejudice people in EK..I too totally experienced what the above ex crew wrote.

ofcoz there were the occasional great flights n awesome layovers but I never knew what to expect from most flights.

yet, I still reminisce my flying days. its only natural because u live such an abnormal reality…a kind of reality no one can understand..like they say breakfast in london lunch in dubai dinner bangkok (no such sector in EK), 5 star hotels, envelopes of money, extremely good looking colleagues..Its hard for anyone to get over THESE things they had while workin for EK. u never really get over the lifestyle but ur sooooo over the job. for me atleats

I just read the article you wrote. I have never been a cabin crew nor worked in the industry before, but I have many close friends working as cabin crews, and surprising enough, so many of them are facing the same problem! It’s just sad that the top managements are not doing anything to eliminate such attitudes. I hope someone gets to the bottom of this and look into improving the working environment on the plane. Being on long flights with such environment can kill a person mentally. I don’t want to see my friends going through such things too. Well done Dragana, on expressing your feelings!

The best for this situation is just not to care too much. My way is simple: when someone ask me let’s say” “why r u not muslim?”, then I never reply “company forbid me to speak about this, end of story!”. I just say: “I’m not muslim because I’m not buddhist” or other stupid answer which makes the situation light and they cut the subject as they don’t have anymore questions. If you really start to care why someone is like this, why they don’t appreciate, why bla bla bla you have to realise it’s the corporation. My aim is to save money and travel as I didn’t have this opporutnity in my country. If you let your any person in this world make you angry, it means you are weak, and you lost. If they try to make u mad, but u make idiots of them in polite and intelligent way then you win 🙂 Regards

I remember being on a flight once after graduating from University. I heard about how glamorous being a flight attendant is etc. etc. So I sat there and I carefully observed what these flight attendants do on long haul flights… 16 hour flight for me and a stop over in Dubai. I just had this sadness because as I looked at them work and serve me my food, I soon realized that this job isn’t really a dream job. Yes, there might be some who say what are you talking about? However, I can truly see that this job is not for the smart. I used to say, I would hate to be a waitress…and that’s exactly what I would have been… a waitress up in the sky only this time, I’m dealing with more people who are tired and annoyed most of the time. The truth is, not a lot of companies care anymore. It’s sad because you will only be that in Dubai, you’re a slave. That’s all they think of you. You will have to forget about who you are. There would be no room for your ego and your well being. Yes, you can start caring for other people but if you yearn for appreciation, look somewhere else. Emirates is not a good company to work for…Unless you are super good looking and willing to be as corrupt and sell your soul for less yes, you can maybe have a shot at the non existent success they offer you which only exists in your dreams. I suggest, NO. Stay clear from being a flight attendant. Why be a flight attendant when you can be the passenger instead?- That’s the question I asked myself and now I’m happier than ever.

  • Hey

That is because you were only one time spectator on a flight with unhappy crew, but do you know that there are more then 20.000 crew in that company and if you knew any of them and lifestyle they are living, maybe you would not have such a superficial conclusion.
You can be passenger of course, but paying probably around 10 times more for a ticket, than those flight attendants (when they decide to travel for lesure). Then how many times a year can you actualy travel and see the world, while some people travel and get payed. There are many good things in cabin crew life, which you can not even think of, since you were one time passenger, on a flight with demotivated crew (or maybe hangovered from too much party at destination).
Emirates became worse towords their employees, then they were before, there is no confusion about that, only your philosophy about being a passenger instead a flight attendant is way too superficial and shows that you have no idea about the subject of this blog.

And..I have one question, If you or anyone else yould help me: two days before I submit the contract with Fly Emirates and Iam wondering If you know what are the consequences If I try to resign before the training starts, before I ever leave for Dubai?
I was positive I do want a change in my life, but now I am in a big crisis.. Thank you very much for an answer..any kind of answer =)..

No consequences. You are nobody’s slave and you have the right (basic human right, actually) to choose. Just don’t submit your contract. Even if you submit it you have the right to resign at any time you want. Good luck!

At first thank you for both your answers. Actually there’s a slight problem, I already submit it. I wrote to them and.. like yesterday and now I’m waiting for their answer.
Of course not, but I ..it’s my fault I realize too late that, I actually do not wanna run away from my life here …At first I thought that that’s a big breakthroug..Dubai..travelling .. chance to change something in my life. Only after I realize… & then all this stories, oh my god, are you serious :/ ..

Like I said I submit it, because I had a deadline, now I’m waiting for their answer. I know that’s maybe foolish, but what do you thing how will they react and what would they say. I’m asking, because you were working for them and I believe you know them better than I do – how they think and work.

        Thank you again ….

Honey, as I said your freedom of choice is just yours and you can resign at any time even before actually start working, after you signed your contract. If you go to Dubai and resign soon, you will have to pay for your ticket home. If you have doubts and don’t want to go, better not go at all. Save yourself from additional stress and costs. You shouldn’t be worried about their answer, they don’t owe you, they didn’t buy you and they didn’t spend any money on you (for plane ticket, accommodation or training so you have no obligations towards theme even though you have submited the contract.

  • Had enough of EK lies

Hi Nana, would you really want to go to work for a company that doesn’t have to follow any kind of Labour Law? That doesn’t have a fair and transparent grievance process? That pays according to one’s passport? That can hold on to your end of service benefit without reason or sanction? Crew are leaving in droves. The cost of living in Dubai increases month on month. Please reread what has been written here. If you withdraw your application Emirates can do nothing to you. Emirates will use and abuse you and spit you out the other end. They have done so before and continue to do so. Emirates is a horrible employer. I wish you luck with your thoughtful decision. Please let us know your decision. Thank you.

  • Had enough of EK lies

    Hi Nana,
I hope you are doing fine. Never ever forget that there is nothing that EK can do to you. Not now. Not ever. It’s your right to NOT take up a job offer. Even if you send the contract. Believe me, EK have so many legal battles on all over the world over landing rights and other matters, that even if they could come after you, legally, they wouldn’t. Please re read Dragana and Tagha’s stories. They are true. Would you really want to be in such a position with an employer that doesn’t even adhere to its own county’s Labour Law? Don’t be trapped into dealing with the thuggery of EK. Many of us look forward to hearing from you. Best wishes.

Hellou, thank you for all your answers, moral support and best wishes. I read several stories about how badly they treat their staff, so of course I’m 100% that I do not wanna go there. I wrote to the coordinator, but she didn’t answer me back. Should I write again? Or just wait for any answer? I really hope they will not sue me or anything, because I do not know how will I handle with this. Thank you again =), for every word.

Yes, Et**d is the worst!! THE WORST!!! They operate with minimum crew and they don’t even have time to perform basic pre-flight duties, such as the checking of safety equipment. Horrible!!

And one more thing. They enjoy all this, they enjoy open days and that sense of power over human lives, they enjoy lying to you, bullying you… It’s a job for people who know how to manipulate, for scammers. I’m not saying that you cannot last there if you are honest person, but it’s going to be very difficult.
