Failure of recruitment policy in Emirates Airline

Somebody has sent me this news recently, with just one question in the subject of the e-mail “Where is Emirates Airline?”:

Etihad, Fly Dubai named best airlines in the world.

My answer was: Emirates is where they deserve to be. At the end of the day, every company is where they deserve to be. No doubt in that.

There are many lists made by many stakeholders, individuals or organizations. Many of them are pre-ordered and well paid for. Don’t believe everything you read. Whoever has the money, they will pay for their name to be first in magazines, internet searches and news. Make no mistake, Airline Industry is highly competitive. Too many airlines, too many flights, too expensive fuel. Some airlines have to take care of their employees because laws make them to. Some companies take care of their staff because they know that excellent customer service will give them competitive advantage in long terms, when things in the air start to be too overcrowded. Some of them decided to exploit people by paying them much less then they deserve or by asking much more work than staffs are paid for, in order to keep the planes flying. I will not ask the obvious question “which airlines are going to survive in the end?”, because the obvious answer is “the smartest ones”. It is always smarter to think in long terms, but not everyone is capable for that, especially when greed and false sense of power take over rational thinking.

So, I don’t know if this article was pre-ordered, but this choice is very well reasoned, and there are factual reasons why Emirates Airline is not in this article.

Arabian Business Article

Arabian Business Article

Etihad is on this list for its readiness to make partnerships with other airlines and this is very true. For example, Etihad has its shares in AirSerbia, and they became partners recently. There are no bigger doors to European Union than those, since Serbia is on its fast way to EU and they will pull Etihad with them.

Fly Dubai is known among Emirates Airline staff as a company where all staffs want to escape to. So, after two years of working in EK, staffs who didn’t resign already, massively apply for positions in Fly Dubai. Salary is bigger and it seems that Fly Dubai is really investing in their image by not letting just any scandal to go into public, unlike Emirates Airline.

But this is the thing nobody tells you at your Open or Assessment day in Emirates Airline: if you sign the contract with them, you’re stuck with them and you can’t change your (Middle East airline) employer for at least two years. EK has agreements with Etihad, Fly Dubai and Qatar Airways which forbid those airlines to accept EK staff unless they have worked with EK for minimum two years. This is just another human rights violation as well: you lose your right to choose an employer and you’re stuck with one or you resign. So, those of you who are still choosing which Middle East airline you want to work for, choose carefully as you can’t change it later or it would be very difficult at least. And, if your new employer is interested in you, as soon as they realize that you have worked for Emirates Airline, they will consider you either as “damaged goods” (if they know about awful working conditions inside EK and all the world’s airline insiders know about it) or “unreliable” (because you are leaving such a “good” company and “well paid” job; if they are not familiar with EK’s reality).

Frivolous recruitment policy in Emirates Airline

SVP HRBS's interview for HR portal

SVP HRBS’s interview for an HR portal

When SVP HRBS Sophia Panayiotou‘s contract was terminated recently,I have conducted a little research online and I’ve found some of Ms.Sophia’s interviews for HR magazines and portals. One is particularly interesting as it perfectly illustrates the emptiness of a recruitment policy in EK. If these unimaginative and stereotypical answers, without any concrete and meaningful fact given, were a recruitment policy for decades, then no wonder that EK has an internal disaster with staff’s turnover rate and resignations.

  • The whole interview is like transcribed from some HR Manual, without any understanding for the subject and EK reality.
  • For example, HR management has never tried to “retain” staff in the company. Their unofficial policy is “resign if you’re not happy”.
  • HR management’s “honest” communication with staff occurs only when they need to notify employees that Muslims will work less and be paid more during the Ramadan and that Employee Regulations Manual has been changed (without staff’s consent or signature). It is a one way and autocratic communication.
  • “Competitive salary, personal growth and benefits” are reserved only for managerial positions. All the rest get exploitation and undignified life and working conditions.
  • Surveys are really conducted every year, but their results are never published or presented as a feedback to employees. Ms.Sophia told in the interview that these surveys have high response rates, but staff never got a proof for this as we never got any feedback on our answered survey questions or complaints.
  • Ms. Sophia also said in her interview that all employees have a chance to meet an HR official and to talk with them, but when I sent her a complaint on workplace harassment she never replied nor she ever intervened when a group of staff complained about forced overtime and inhumane shifts. Nor her, nor any other HR manager whose basic role IS to take care of the staff.
  • Internal recruitment is just a phrase which has a meaning only when upgrading staff from grade 4 to grade 5 (which is, basically, the same). People for higher positions are recruited externally and existing staffs are kept on the same positions for years (unless they’ve managed to get wasta/connection inside EK management).
  • Higher salary is given to the people who have western or local passports, which is an outrageous example of a pure discrimination

When you go to Emirates Airline website, you can find a job opening. If you read it closely you will see that this opening was posted in January this year and is STILL OPEN for applications. This is due to huge staff turnover rate and massive staff’s resignations, so Emirates Airline is always short of staff. No company, especially airline company, is that successful to hire people for the SAME positions throughout the hole year.

Another failure of EK recruitment policy is presenting “living and working in Dubai” as a benefit itself. With money that you get as a salary, you can only watch others how they enjoy expensive Dubai and you can rarely travel with discounted plane tickets as you have no money to survive in Dubai and you have no time, since you are constantly working and sleeping.

Presenting “living in Dubai” as a working benefit just proves how lazy and uninterested HR managers are for doing the job they are paid for. This kind of policy has never intended to retain staff and make them happy, but only to use them and throw them back to their home countries when they are too exhausted or sick to work, with no medical insurance compensations and, very often, with no end of service money.

Job opening in Emirates Airline open for almost one year already

Job opening in Emirates Airline open for almost one year already

It turns out that Emirates Airline robes their own employees in order to have money for sponsoring all the football and tennis teams and events where their brand is advertised.

The failure of recruitment policy in EK lies in the fact that they’ve got better employees than they deserve. Someone would argue that this is not a failure. I would reply that it is a big failure when you fail to keep those people in the company and, moreover, you even manage to make them feel like they have no value whatsoever.

Dragana, are you losing it or has your blog been taken over by the dark side? Your recent story of a pilot being wronged has been written by a loony who according to his writing should not be anywhere near a cockpit… or bicycle. And your latest missive about the greatness of EY partnering with Air Serbia… well,,, what did you smoke? This blog started out as a candle in the night. But it seems to be veering off into the UFO abduction league. Please. Turn back.

Well, if we assume that you are a regular and benevolent reader of this blog, you will notice that I have never praised the partnership between EY and JU. I explained the reasons why EY was voted for a best airline as written in the article and from a business point of view. My personal opinion about that partnership is not bright, but I don’t want to discuss it here.

You are lucky I didn’t erase your comment because “name calling” is not welcome here, especially when you are accusing without any evidence for your claims.

If you are working for EK (although you wrote the comment from USA) you know that it is very possible to be falsely accused for almost everything there. This pilot has a case in the court of law against EK, so if you like to comment his case you are welcome to do so but, please, provide some mature vocabulary and thinking.

Otherwise, your comment(s) will be deleted.

      Thank you.

I apologize, if I came across as too aggressive and/or insulting. What I wanted to say is this: Your blog is the pebble that started an avalanche inside EK. To which conclusion is yet to be seen. It started with exemplary attention to detail, to facts and to fairness. It is my personal opinion that this has degraded in recent posts. I might be right, I might be wrong. But this blog degrading into drivel is what some people are longing for. Take care.
P.S. Yes, I work for EK.
P.P.S. I don’t mind you deleting my comments as long as you have taken notice.

This is a blog form of writing. It means that its content depends on my choice and personal opinion on things. I am trying to be objective as much as I can.

Your comment refers on unimportant details and things you simply can’t know (like whether a pilot’s story is true or not), while leaving out all the important aspects of the articles (like recruitment policy and treatment of staff).

I expect the same objectiveness from my readers as the one I am trying to have.

So much spare time? Or does she manage her time carefully and write with passion about the wrongs at EK. She is indeed moving forward and helping many people to find the courage and bravery to do so. EK were offered the chance to get the blog removed with a simple apology. Of course, they would never apologise. When the threats and bullying didn’t work , they tried getting a very junior member of the legal team at EK to write to the Host company asking for it to be closed down. It didn’t work. Dragana, please keep moving forward by bringing all the wrongs to light with this blog. Well done.

I stumbled onto this blog a few days ago while searching for info about Emirates Airlines.I was not expecting to find something like this as I assumed that Emirates was a great company to work for.

    Now, I’m not so sure.

My wife and I have owned a small business in Southern California for a number of years, and we feel the time is right for us to close this chapter of our life and move on.My work experience after college was in the courier, air freight, ground cargo business, and I’d like to start another career in this field with an airline that is growing and expanding.

This is what led me to Emirates. They have openings in their Cargo division in Dubai and in Asia that I feel am qualified for.Does the Cargo division have the same type of problems that have been outlined in this blog ? I am U.S. educated and passport holder if that makes a difference.

Dragana, thanks for writing this blog.It has been an eye opening read.Good luck in your future endeavors !

I will be honest with you – I don’t know. I was surprised and hurt and this blog was created as an expression of my deep trauma from physical and mental abuse. As a sort of psychotherapy for me.

I have a tendency to be a loyal person, to work honestly and with responsibility and I believe that if I do so, at least some of it will come back to me. My surprise was about the fact that nothing returned to me, except constant punishments, arrogant behaviour and treatment like me and my colleagues are just garbage.

I felt safe in UAE at first. I liked local people. It’s the naked and ruthless capitalism the one which erases humanity from the face of the Earth.

Everyone has different experience. I don’t like to advise people when they ask me about EK. I can just tell them about my experience and experiences of the people who wrote their stories to me. Who knows, maybe Emirates will finally understand that people make company and profit and they will start to cherish human resources they have. Bottom line – only that is a sustainable business. Everything else is a pure exploitation of human souls and nature until nothing is left to exploit any more.

      P.S.
There is an unwritten rule in UAE that people with USA passports are treated better than others. One more reason for you to try. Good people bring good changes.

Thank you for your wishes. All the best to you too.

Hi Dragana, this post really nails it. What you have written about the HR mentality towards staff is perfectly true. The current HR is completely useless and the worst part it is getting worse by the day.
I too had made a complaint some years ago about harassment meted out to me to Miss Aalia Badri, who was the HR person in charge of finance at that time. She ignored my email at that time. 2 months later she emailed me stating that she “hoped things were resolved by now”…… i presume she expects harrassment to get resolved by itself. I replied back stating that the issue is still open giving an explanation of the issue. After that I got no response.

I still have the email but cannot share the same in a public forum as I’m still in EK and I’m sure we all know the consequences of doing so.

Ek is all about useless managers getting huge salaries and benefits and staffs who actually do the hard work and get only exploitation and crumbs in return.

This kind of business organisation is just plain stupid, even for a predatory capitalism as it will bring only business defeat to EK.

For those that may not know the system used to record the annual appraisal (called performance matters) has on option for the appraiser to select yes or no. Yes being that they accept the ratings and comments of the supervisor appraising them and no being that they do not accept the ratings and comments of their supervisor.
However the NO option does not work. If u click on NO’ the system will throw up a message prompt stating that you need to take up the issue with your line manager. The only option left is to click yes or do not click anything at all.
But EK HR allows the manager to click the yes button on your behalf and close the appraisal officially. So the annual appraisal in EK is a farce. Kiss up to the bosses or get bad annual appraisals. Since increments are based on the annual appraisals, bad annual appraisals = low/no increments…….cheers for new joiners. Be sure u have strong God fathers.

I guess they have to stop choosing their managers by which passport they have or by wasta criteria. It turns out that almost everyone (but not everyone!) who couldn’t be managers in their home countries, came to EK to be ones. Minority came hoping for common sense and healthy working conditions and challenges. They’re almost all gone by now.

Although I admire you for what you have done for EK staff, including me, I think your blog is now aimed at tarnishing and destroying EK. You have made changes for us, small things, but dont destroy the company image. Let go of your hate.

EK are doing a great job at that themselves. There is still a huge degree of arrogance and viciousness to staff. I haven’t seen any hate exhibited by Dragana; however, I have seen some factual and intelligent analysis. If you are an EK Management troll, which I am sure you are, then instead of writing here, perhaps you should use your time more constructively to make real changes for staff. EK have the privilage of having some great staff. They don’t treat them great!! I would ask EK to publish the results of the survey in a transparent manner, to show figures of how many cc are leaving and to show what changes (that you refer to) are being made. We both (and all the thousands who flock here to read) know that they will never do this. The sacking of a few HR staff (punished as they implemented that survey) and the reshuffling of Kevin are all cosmetic moves. Treat staff in a humane and respectful manner. The blog will cease to be relevant. Keep on the same path then it will become more and more destructive fuelled in no small part by the arrogance and vindictivness of EK Management!

Yes, seems like this is EK management’s new strategy to discredit me and the blog.

“I admire you” part is there to prevent any suspicions that the commenter is paid to write negative stuff, while the “you are destructive and you hate” part is there to manipulate consciousness of the readers.

It is a very successful manipulation actually but people who decided to implement it here seems to underestimate readers’ intelligence (again).

The “hate” part just made me laugh. No one hates more than people who love money more than other people.

If one Serbian girl could destroy the whole company’s image, I guess that all the lowest grades staff would open blogs of their own. This accusation made me laugh as well. Especially because I have never contacted any journalist, which I would certainly do if the image destruction was my goal.

I agree with EXEGHQ, recent changes are only cosmetic. There will be NO ACTUAL CHANGES until people are free to express their opinion and not being punished for doing so.

All the steps that EK management made so far are wrong and I am sad when I see managers struggling to do react on recent events but not being able to do the right thing – admit that they were wrong, apologise and soften the methods of predatory capitalism as they only kill the company from the inside. No blog and no girls are needed to kill the Emirates image. EK managers are doing that job just fine without any blogs or media.

I am not a manager, but a grade 6. I am for all the things she does, it just seems she is trying to find new things to say that will tarnish the image of the company. I myself hate the”system” in EK, but i dont go about saying bad things about the company. I have worked at both the airport as well as (currently) in HR, so i know more things about the company unfairness than most. I just dont think it is fair to tarnish an image of a company based on certain events in the past! Move on.

          You are very contradictory, Someone.

I guess if you feel that you should do something, do it. Telling me to “move on” is not a change from your side, just protection of your own position. Newsflash for you: you can’t seat on two chairs. Either be brave enough to change something (and since you are in HR you are in the position to positively influence some people) or defend the company and your salary and benefits.

So, what changes did you bring in order for those events to stay in the past?

Stop talking about me and this blog. We’re irrelevant for you and your reality. Changes start from within ourselves, so before accusing someone else, accuse yourself first: have you ever actually DID something to prevent this EK reality you don’t like?

Publicity was not my first choice of fighting for my rights. I believe in honest and open communication but I guess that EK managers don’t believe in it.

I agree with yourself “Anonymous” that things shouldn’t go that far however, you are very lucky because you didn’t taste the “injustice” and the “unfairness” at EK….Maybe if you put yourself in our shoes…you can understand why we are saying that. Speaking away from the subject and since you are grade 6…you are medically insured….no one can predict and hope for the illness….my friend I was grade 6 and medically insured same as yourself but, they managed to kicked me away to my own country now is that fair!!! till now I am under treatment as its been more than 4 plus years….Is that fair!!! Since you work in HR department, ask Mr Ashley Fernandez how many times did he postpone sending my own dues as he know more than anyone in the company that I was waiting anxiously for every Dirham to start my treatment…..Is that fair!! When there was a medical seminar and my own doctors decided to share my case with specialists from all over the world as my case considered as Critical, Rare and very Dangerous (shown on the medical reports) and I told Mr Fernandez to send my dues almost a month before the due date….do you know what he did!!! he went to BOM on vacation without leaving a hand over…Is that fair!!! eventually, I had to cancel my appointment and wasted that chance…Not only this, he was briefing all that he did his utmost for my case and he had violated rules just for me to start my treatment….This is WRONG and inaccurate and I proved that to Mr Abdulaziz Al Ali when he was expecting my call as he had thankfully returned part of my dues….so, why did he miss adding them if what he said was true!!!

My friend I was diagnosed of having Cerebral Brain Tumor in left basal Ganglia on Feb 26th 2010…EK clinic and EK Doctors said that same was formulated since birth without even seeing me!!! Even though, I hold a commercial pilot licence and I was practicing my job in major airline company as I had to go for medical check from head to toes every 6 month to keep my licence current, and I was recruited at EK after the required medical check….even Dr Deep Kayed MD, FAAN (US Board certified Neurologist and Clinical Neurophysiologist) at The City Hospital was unsure based on my MRI and CT Scan results in his hand whether it was since birth or not, EK Doctors said so without even seeing my face….is that fair!! My doctors have pointed their fingers on the 12 hours shift for more than 5 years with excessive customer service…they said it is not healthy, I wonder what EK Doctors would say regarding that!!!

Yes…this happened at Emirates Airline and I still have every little document…the problem is that time is not on my side. It has been a long time since the matter began and who knows what certain people have done with the facts. Let Mr Clarks knows what is happening and let HH knows that there are some (unfortunately) influenced managers don’t deserve to be at their positions thinking that they would live forever…with their criminal misusing actions.

    Dear Tagha,
Firstly, I am so sorry to hear about your condition and I hope you are undergoing treatment and responding well and my thoughts are with you and your family. I see you have had the joys of dealing with MBA Medical Benefits Administration which is very distinct from Emirates Clinic. From memory EK clinic is only used by cc, fd and senior management staff. I am certain they were not involved in your diagnosis. MBA is run by an Indian Mafia who do everything possible to deny claims. They “lose” paperwork and try every dirty trick not to pay legitimate claims. It is amazing to see how the people who suffer the most at the hands of this Mafia are the grade 6 and 7 Indian staff members who are invariably loyal, intelligent and hardworking. Its very sad to see. I am sure all of these policies come from the top. (excluding HH) When Sir Maurice Flanagan retired (a really honourable man) the level of nastiness, bullying and dirty tricks increased by several notches. I have personally heard of CCMs requesting health data on staff that they were not entitled to and there are major issues with consent. I am hopeful that a number of governing bodies will read this and enquire accordingly. It would be great to see MBA receive some of the treatment that HR got recently. Having said that, it is all cosmetic and EK won’t change. The poster who keeps telling Dragana to move on is clearly no Grade 6 in EKHR. I have asked people who work there and they feel it is someone from an external company (allegedly) that is being paid to defend EK, or a senior member of staff writing with the full knowledge of his or her bosses. The writer is STILL unable to tell us what changes have been implemented. I wonder if the Top Management just wanted to scare their underlings evem more than they already are. Time will tell. Get better soon.

      Dear EXEGHQ,

I thank you for your encouraging words however, what you have said does not surprise me at all even though, it has some great unknown facts at least for me. I really don’t know how things work at MBA but, I remember that I went there twice with my colleague (as my life became unpredictable of the seizures that could happen at any moment without a prior notice) and I met Ms Ranjini (04-708 5138) and after asking me for my staff number to key it in her system, she told me that that I would be covered by the medical insurance scheme, I have to submit original receipts for claiming the amount (usually takes about 7 days) and the most important thing, my basic salary would remain deposit in my bank account till the end of my treatment period since I was insured and I was collapsed on duty, an Incident Report had been filed by MAS and ASM on duty and the most important thing that EK Clinic and EK Doctors had approved my treatment plans outside UAE (without seeing me!!) as there was nothing to do more than the MRI and CT scanning in UAE. In fact I asked her if I have to see any EK Dr for that…she replied “no need as everything is on the system!!”.

When I went to Jordan to start treatment, I found out that nothing of what I was briefed by Ranjini was true as my salary was cut off and when I sent my original receipts after confirming with Ms Jenifer D. Mascarenhas (04-7085139) on the phone, MBA had reimbursed only 1/4 of the cost of the Angiography and that’s all what they have reimbursed till this very moment!! and the worst part is, they took more than 2 plus months to send the money!! I have tried to email them and even to call them but, I faced a huge ignorance!!

Still there are more and more to tell and of illegalities that they have done, I just want to mention one thing, Mr Ashley Fernandez MHR-EKAS had done a great job in trying to get rid of me (I don’t want to mention everything in details as soon you will read it here). On May 4th 2011, Mr Fernandez had asked me to come over to Dubai for medical tests as EK Doctors have contacted my own treating Dr in Jordan !! but it was still not sufficient detail to ascertain my fitness for continued employment (is it true that doctors dont have a proper communication!!) even though, I was sending my company every single medical report when ever I have it, Mr Fernandez had fixed an appointment with Dr Diane Mclvor on May 30th 2011 at 1130 AM as he was hoping not to be “present” so as to terminate me in fact, my doctors were amazed of that due to my recent brain operations, recent Hemorrhage and the Edema that is still existed till the moment (patients with brain operations, injuries and surgeries MUST NOT fly for a minimum period of 4-6 months), however, they gave me the choice providing that I should consider Oxygen on board the flight if I decided to travel and I would handle the responsibility of such decision, they gave me a medical report just to legally clear their responsibility and at the same time, wondering how could a doctor ask that to a patient with recent brain operations as they handle EK Dr the responsibility (this was written on the said medical report!!!) Next thing, I was medically terminated on June 16th 2011, Mr Fernandez had sent me the termination letter at the same time, had filed a case “Escaping from the employer”….See what the HR can do without being questioned!!! yes he was right in telling every body that he did violate some rules for me!!! Besides, why I wasn’t referred to EK Dr since has begun same as other departments…and why I was asked to see them at that time even though, EK clinic and doctors had approved my medical leave….Why EK did not sending me to their designated clinic here in Jordan (for the local staff) and send the results directly to EK as what they do for the new joiners!!!

But there is a reason behind “why Mr Fernandez had done that!!” well, I had met Mr Fernandez to complain about my line manager Mr Patrick Dsouza who is well known for all for his bullying and aggrieve who have changed an injustify Memo since 2 years to a current Warning to deprive me from promotion, Mr Dsouza had just changed the date keeping the same text on the meeting, I showed Mr Fernandez the Memo and asked him to read my warning from his system…..he was shocked and stunned…he promised to deal with the case…but he never did that to his precious friend.

For me and after all that, I don’t exclude anyone as I have contacted some EK officials (including HH office twice), many friends from inside and outside the company who I am very grateful and thankful have taken the initiative to let my voice to be heard but with no tangible outcome other than they get humiliated and insulted by their staff. I was like yourself not fully convinced of what I was briefed but soon my suspicious had faded out on Sept 17th with a big disappointment…so, do I need more than this! I didn’t sign on any paper regarding receiving my rights or my full rights and I still keep everything which soon you will read it here.

Hi Tagha1. Thanks for sharing this well written piece above. When you finish off what you want to write, I would suggest that it be forwarded by Dragana to the relevant licence board for EK Medical. They will probably be registered by a series of bodies like Dubai Government, The GCAA, Australian Council on Health Care Standards (ACHS) and the UK GMC. I know how much EK hate publicity that they don’t control and I’m sure that a relevant governing body would want to be seen to be doing its job by checking out these allegations. Please write in a factual manner; it will cause the 9th floor endless headaches to keep batting away the bad publicity. MBA need to come under the spotlight as they have screwed so many people. Hope you are coping with your illness and thanks again for sharing. You have no idea how many people will feel brave enough to write when they read stories like yours.

Thank you again my friend in fact, my story and same many more were illegally played and handled by HR managers for example, I don’t think that Dr Diane Mclvor or any Dr could ask me to fly to Dubai if she knew that I just did some continuous brain surgeries at that time with a huge Edema (still presents at this moment) as this could cost the Dr his/her medical licence.

I think that Mr Fernandez had caused this endless headaches to the 9th floor by embroiling EK Clinic with his illegal demand but that’s a good thing though just to show how HR could change rules for managers benefits….and this could be legally credited to my case. Instead of doing this malicious action that is away from any HR rules, he should revert back to me with the results of my complaint against my manager Patrick Dsouza as this is part of HR duties!

I will my friend….in fact, I am on the final touches of writing my story. I will include every legitimate piece of information that I have including the HR conversation in black and white. Same will be sent for all inside and outside the company so that every one should think twice before joining or taking any illegal decision thinking that he would run away with it.
