Open letter to HH Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed AlMaktoum

Since Emirates Airline management called my Embassy to tell them that I can end up in prison for writing “things against Sheikh” on Facebook (I didn’t write anything against him, but I had to escape from UAE in fear of being arrested for manifesting my freedom of speech), I am writing this open letter to Sheikh in hope that he will read it and make some actions to protect his employees from constant prosecution and brutal torture with shifts, low salaries, humiliating treatment, forced overtime and punishments.

Human and Labour rights should be respected and employees should be treated with dignity and respect in every company but especially in one which operates internationally, flying its planes to the countries where its employees are coming from.

Dear Excellence HH Sheikh Ahmed,

I have worked as a check in and boarding agent for Emirates Airline for one year and five months. My last day of service was 6th of August.

I was presented with a dismissal letter which violates not only company’s manuals but also Dubai Labour Law and Human and Labour Rights guaranteed in UAE. I find this embarrassing and shocking for such a respected company with an excellent public image.

My employment with Emirates was terminated for “inappropriate behaviour” which was asking EKAS DVP Anoma Manuel on an open forum how much is her salary, after the claims of the present managers that staff can “survive” in Dubai with given salary.

??????????

Two days after the forum I was suspended for whole two weeks only to be presented with dismissal from the service at the end.

This situation was the escalation of the difficulties and events that all staff in EKAS are facing and we want to seek your help and protection because we have no one else to turn to.

Me and my friends were recruited in Europe and we were happy to accept the honour to work with the best airline in the world. We all have university degrees and we were expecting dignified conditions of work and good opportunities to grow within the company. But once we have arrived in Dubai it became obvious that it will not be possible. We were presented with tiring night shifts immediately (10 hours shifts, with 45 minutes break) and a very disrespectful treatment from our superiors, since organizational culture in EKAS is poor and undeveloped.

After 8 months of working, since many staff resigned, management was left with the lack of staff which they have decided to recover by making even bigger pressure on remaining staff: they came up with 12 hours shifts in 4 duty days and 4 days off schedule. First two days we work day shifts, and on the two last days of the cycle we work night shifts. We have the right on only one 1 hour break. Since we have to change two buses from our company provided accommodation, it is actually 14 hours shift with the opportunity to eat only once in 14 hours period.

Roster for May 2014.

Management imposed forced overtime on our days off also, which is not in our contracts and nobody told us, during the recruitment process, that we will be deprived from our days off and rest.

We all look exhausted and feel very depressed. We also feel trapped and deceived regarding our employment in Emirates Airline, since we were never told that we have to work 14 hours shifts, without seeing much sunlight in all 4 duty days in one cycle; with 6 hours working continuously without a break; and forced overtime on our days off. We even have whole 7 hours shift with no break at all!

Administration is often refusing our leaves if they think that the load at the airport will be huge. We are forced to clear the big queues at the airport, work for hours at the same counter, tag the bags for hours like robots, without any breaks.

EKAS management with DVP Anoma Manuel wants multicultural and multinational ground staff, but this whole truly nice concept ends at the airport where young and educated people from all over the world are treated like animals trapped in a cage. There is a rule of fear imposed by high management and it creates depressive and non-efficient working environment.

Bottom line, Your Highness, we, check in and boarding agents, are the most responsible for Your company’s image and brand and we deserve much more for giving our skills, health and time to this company than to be exploit like slaves just in order for high management to have very high salaries and benefits. In the meantime, prices in Dubai increased much but our salaries remained at the same level – 3500 dirhams. Many of us found ourselves living on debts and loans, surviving in Dubai. And we have very few opportunities to grow within the company since there is a developed culture of wastas and discriminatory promotions.

Profit has always been a primary concern of the management, but in this case, Your Highness, there is too much injustice at the airport. There is, also, a huge number of managers having high salaries whose only job is to humiliate and pressurize staff to work more. And if we express our dissatisfaction, they tell us to resign if we are not happy or they punish us, so many staffs are afraid to express their opinion.

We are expected to leave our home, parents and friends, work beyond hard, earn money for others, and, at the end, when we feel exhausted, stressed out and humiliated, we are expected just to go back home without any savings or dignity.

I have worked in some known international companies. I have also worked as academy staff at my University. I have seen some injustice and bad employee treatment, but this is just beyond my imagination. Emirates Airline was a strong, respected company but, in just one year, things went considerably wrong. Even passengers are massively complaining and asking what is happening with Emirates. Company is growing too fast and it needs very strong and capable people to keep it together, but things at the airport are just out of control.

Kind regards.

What has Indian nationality to do with this? Karbaan, means broken! Are you generalizing all Indians to be ‘broken’, damaged or in some way inferior. It is sad that this young girl, Dragana, was mistreated by her employer Emirates, and she had to express her disappointment through this blog. But that doesn’t justify disrespectful and racist replies by anonymous people being allowed on here. Dragana, if you are able to, please remove such comments that only provoke hate by other Indian nationals who are educated and or respectful towards people of all races. Wish you a success in a different part of the world. Dubai seems rich and glamorous, but believe me there are more naturally beautiful and lovely and love-filled places in this world. Go, create your own beautiful future!

Yes you are all the same. Used to miss treatment and once you are given power you go all insane with it like dictators. Your own country is so corrupt that you carry that corrupted system everywhere you go. Backstabbing, reporting, inhumane behaviour all comes from you in these middle eastern airlines you all work. It’s a fact of experience on my behalf. But I don’t blame you because you all have the ignominious coplex.

Also, I’d like to request you with all my heart to please stop being the kind of person who prefers to judge an entire country/ race based on a poorly-formed stereotype. It is not in the nature of an educated person to discriminate based on religion/ caste/ color/ nationality, so do choose carefully what you prefer to be seen as. I have had countless bad experiences with a lot of people of varying nationalities, but I’d rather not lose all my friends of said nationalities based on a bad experience with someone else. I hope this makes sense. Have a good day ahead.

            Dear Don,

“@sohani I am sure you are from Indian because what you just said is very wrong and stupid. This is what is happening everyday in dubai in every company you work with. I worked in dubai for 3 years and it was like hell. So get your fact right before you accuse anyone”

This was a very misinformed reply on your behalf since Sohani (Indian commenter) was talking about the boss Anoma (Indian Manager) who Dragana (Serbian author) was also complaining about. Sohani meant to say “Anoma is misusing her power, Anoma thinks she is the boss” – I hope I’ve idiot-proofed this enough for you? Once you understand the comment, and it looks like Sohana is actually in agreement with Dragana, it surprisingly doesn’t seem very wrong and stupid, no?

If you read the comments above carefully, you will find that while everyone (Indians, Serbians, all alike) was on the same topic, ie. Emirates’ mistreatment of lower ranking staff, you were up on a racist cloud of your own making ridiculous assumptions with a really bad understanding of the English language. I hope you don’t reveal here or anywhere else what country you’re from yourself, because your countrymen will most likely be ashamed of sharing their nationality with a dim, racist prick like you. Now do everyone a favor and pick up your racist poop from all over this place (means delete all your racist comments, just in case you didn’t understand). This discussion was never supposed to be about race/ nationality.

Have a lovely day ahead. 🙂

How many senior ek managers can get a job in their own country? The worst racists in EK are brits. The biggest percentage and the most vicious. Then the Indians by sheer numbers. Lots of great Indians in EK who are treated badly by their own. I’m a Brit.i am no racist. The brits in EK at vp and above are 95% idiots and incompetent.

You know, that’s because Indian race are not respecting each other. as you can see slums are living next to billionaires and they don’t even do shit about it. Once those slums get chance to have a little power to control other people, their expectation is so much high to be respected by over powering people. Don’t be surprised that Indian will lick the boss’s shits up till they get what they want. they are amazingly pathetic!!

Indians are very nice, human beings I agree, until you work from them or if they are a bit above you, than you see the difference. Maybe in Emirates they are different, because mainly, lest say 98% per cent you face with Emirates are nasty, with a big N!

I agree but this attitude can be found in all nationality. I am an Australian and I have worked with severe nationals and have faced similar problems but I cannot be judgemental.

Several idiots are there including Indians who misuse thier postion but I will never pit the whole culture or nationality on a bias.

I would blame the recruitment who are not putting the right person as a leader.

Reading the comments and entire conservation from all I can just say the recruitment team or heads of the department are not fair or qualified.

I remember one of the top multinational company keeps rotating it’s senior staff to avoid miss using position.

I think Emirates should try the rotation policy to see if it works.

Or take help from outside source /professional company to servey and implement solution to restore staff confidence.

Emirates is big and is an excellent company looks like some people in senior position is thinking they own it.

Once crew scheduling called all crew that called sick for that particular flight if they would do the flight if they changed the purser. People did accept. Its cultural from that part of the world to act like this, is necessary to show power.

The issues here aren’t about whose from India, Sri Lanka, Serbia or anywhere else.

It’s about the work ethic and culture at Emirates.

Dragana complains about working a 4-on/4-off roster. This in itself isn’t an issue, in fact, at the airline I work at, a US carrier, a 4/4 roster is like nirvana – everyone wants it, very few get it. The standard is 4 on, 2 off. We get a 30 minute meal break in a 12 hour shift, so 45 minutes isn’t bad either.

The bigger issues are the EK dictators, posing as “Managers” at Emirates. People trained with few people skills are in charge of others, expected to enforce the many rules and regulations at EK.

Forced overtime is shocking and clearly violates labour laws in many countries. By it’s definition, overtime is hours worked at employee discretion, beyond the normally contracted hours. They cannot be forced, else they become contractual hours and the employee is entitled to a new contract with additional remuneration.

I fear this letter will fall on deaf ears to be honest. In EK’s eyes, Dragana was the issue and she’s been removed from the equation. She’ll simply be replaced by some other unsuspecting poor soul.

Listen to me……You don’t have to be that rude, UAE is a great country and we take it as our own country since it opened the doors wide to welcome each one of us and we will never let you say something bad about it. You should be appreciative to UAE since you lived there for 2 years….but, it seems that you don’t have manners!!

UAE has warm welcomed people from different origins and different countries as each one of them has put a small stone in building it and they put their efforts and watch it growing and those people that you mentioned, were the first to do that so enough being racist and discriminating here.

We are criticizing what is happening there and not UAE or even Emirates Airline as we are so loyal to them, the rules and regulations are just written in books and not practiced. Besides, we are having our passports and documents with us and we travel whenever we like and there is no “hassle” as what you mentioned….and this blog for Emirates Airline staff ONLY….so, outsiders are not welcome here, yourself is included!

Speaking about debts, loans, credit cards are away from the debate here…..being a “Good” man by giving some advises, you should do the same first.

In fact…i would like to say well done…amd unfortunately, this is something that occurs in every working corner in dubai, be it corporate or construction. Slavery is huge problem in Dubai even for those wearing white collars and ties. From my own various and long experiences in Dubai, i find there is almost zero respect for working hours, salary rates, overtime payment and individual space (mind you even for a muslim in Ramadan!)
I highly believe that this is not due to the absence of our employee rights itself (as they are written right there when we sign contracts), but it is because these very rights are not persued, respected or maintained by the upper hands (bosses, owners and government influences who are supposed to protect employees in such cases).
Basically, there is no one to go to for help and protection – and nobody cares.
So yes! slaverly, in every class and grade, decorates Dubai in all its “glamorous” corners and it is starting to shine much brighter than its gold.
    Thank you for speaking up.

Totally agree, you said in one year and a half what i couldn’t say in 6 year with the slavery attitude adapted by Emirates Group.
also i want to add on to the above slavery attitude adapted by Emirates Group,
    • the staff are made to work under the hot burning sun at noon time, though as per the Labor Law, there shouldn’t be anyone working in the open during the noon time( between 1200- 1500)
    • industrial injuries are dealt with very carelessly to the extent that cases are treated wrong which had caused lifetime handicapped/defect and not compensated.
    • long duties with no proper breaks at times lead to death of the staff while on duty.
    • no shuffling of shift , which had again caused mental/nervous breakdown for staff due to years long night duties.
    • working in a very risky environment , airport ramp, with no risk allowance.
    • no shift allowance , for odd shifts
    • no leaves approved due to operational reasons throughout a year causing leave days forfeited
    • Many years we are not entitled for bonus for Flimsy Reasons although the company’s profits are in the continuously growing year after year.

I really hope that this attitude is changing soon and they start have mercy feelings about staff, specially the operational staff.
Although I love Emirates the country but I hate the behavior of Emirates Airlines.

This is the reason I left too, even with plenty of skills, better qualifications than my superiors, more years of experience in the group I was not permitted to advance my career…why ….I was simply perceived as a threat that would take their place and do things right. So knowing I would never be where I wanted to I packed my bags and left, I went where all of that is appreciated and paid accordingly. The initial regulations of the company were not so bad but since this economic downfall a few years ago, they went crazy looking for means to make more money…allowed people who promised they will save the money to run the place, they forgot they had hard working and loyal employees within the group, hired newcomers and changed contracts with less salary and benefits…this was their way of reducing costs. Meanwhile people who have been there for a long time and did their job well were forced to leave by imposing un-realistic and abusive rules. I remember that silly star program (or whatever was called) that would take one day of your roster to go and smile nicely for a free dinner at some stupid managerial scheme with no sense and just big words. Instead they could have given all that money to employees as bonus and everyone would have been happier, but no …some friend of a manager had to have a job as a consultant and be paid thousands of dirhams a day for selling Stupid ideas to people who would just laugh at it, under the threat that they will loose their job if they dont participate in this comedy act. But they had money to make on the back of others…..maybe that’s the case in a lot of places in the world but you can choose to leave or make a stand like Dragana. Well done…you had tha courage to say things I did not say 🙂

if the reason for Dragana’s termination was a Q about salary, than I have to say that both parties behave wrong. Dragana should not ask this kind of question specially if she have a degree in Human Resource – she supposed to know that it just not professional. if the management is pressuring you and you actually afraid of it than why you r provoking them with this kind of question?? You supposed to expect from them EVERYTHING, even not really decent joke can become fatal for your career. Manager Anoma M. also should not take it THAT offensive, the role of the management is to solve problems, she supposed to talk to Dragana for just a min by saying simply that “its not professional Q, it even mention in the contract that you cannot disclose your salary with anybody. So please, in order to prevent a possible problem don’t ask again this kind of Q.” That’s it!! and forget about it! Management should also guide its staff to the right direction and have patience to deal even with this kind of Q, that’s why he/she is on this position. If your tooth is in pain, u r not removing it immediately right? I think Anoma M. is not enough qualified for the management position, she is not capable to solve a problem for a win-win result. though, in the letter we read only Dragana’s point of view…
When staff is signing a contract for 10 hrs no one can push them to work more , if it happened you have a full right to reject it FROM THE BEGINNING. Sometimes HR is “trying” their luck: “what if they will agreed to work more?” and when you agrees – he is the problem comes. Dragana says “We are expected to leave our home, parents and friends, work like slaves, earn money for others, and, at the end, when we feel exhausted, stressed out and humiliated, we are expected just to go back home without any savings or dignity” . I don’t think that this statement will help you coz you HAVE READ AND AGREED to leave your home, parents and friends, there is nothing you can complain about!! and salary you earn, you also agreed.. I think that you need to learn more about you labor rights here, in Dubai and never agrees on such a horrible timing. Dragana, wish you all the best in your future, keep it up and KNOW YOUR RIGHTS!!!

I agree with her and people in companies are misusing there powers, being bosses it does’nt mean you do unfair to the staffs who are actually working hard to let you and your company shine i always wanted to work for emirates but now onward i feel like not to go for a company which have these kind of bosses who dont respect there staffs and specially thy them self doesnt belong to that position of being boss of some one.

I hope if HH sheikh rashid bin makhtoum passes by this take proper action to the bosses like her and give this staff her job back with respect and better opportunity to flurish and plump.

Very well said… Honestly… A great and courageous girl like you is very very much appreciated. I myself am an ex staff of Emirates for 7 whole years and all what is mentioned in this letter is 100% true. Anoma and her team of monsters are like the worst nightmare to all the airport staff. Nobody likes her infact everybody HATES her except for her favourite staff and superiors ofcourse who she uses as spies and slaves to get what she wants at anytime to screw others abd in return they get what they want too when they adk for it. If I also keep on talking abd talking about it I will never ever stop. I passed through alot and finally and thankfully I am out. And I am sure that HH doesn’t get the full true picture of what is happening because he is a fair and respectful man and will never agree to all this if he is aware about it. Well done.

I read your complaint Dragana but I disagree with most of what you are saying. I worked for Dnata for almost 5years and I had numerous chances of promotions but never went through with them. I have invested in my home country with the salary I earned from Emirates Group. Most people leave their home country and go to Dubai and want to live a lavish lifestyle and live beyond their means. It doesn’t matter how much money you earn, you have to know how to budget. I have seen a manager earning more than 30,000 dirhams in debt. My and my colleagues shifts were always adjusted when we complained which was surprising and amazing. What I liked about the company even more was that we were listened to. We never always got what we wanted which is expected, but I felt we were listened to. Am in America now and I have realized that salaries for checking agents is not higher here than in Dubai. The best thing about Dubai is that it’s enough to live off it. You made a big mistake of asking about someone else’s salary which is UNACCEPTABLE in any country, am sure even in your country you can’t go around asking how much people earn, that’s enough ground for a disciplinary action. You chose to leave your family and friends and accept the salary. Am sure it looked like a lot of money but when you started spending it, it wasn’t much, you need to budget. Am grateful for the opportunity I got from Emirates Group and if I ever went back I would be glad to work there again. There is no company that is perfect but Emirates Group tries. I love flying Emirates airline and I am sorry Dragana, I can’t stop. There are other numerous ways of asking for a raise, you chose a wrong route. I wish you all the best.

I have seen several people getting final warnings in America for asking someone who is in the same grade, not management, how much they earned and that person complained. I have seen someone who got fired for divulging their own salary coz she told someone who went and complained to the management. When I signed a contract for my current job there was a clause which dictated that I cannot disclose or talk about my salary to any of my colleagues. If America is not a civilized world, then show me which country you are talking about please.

What you have experienced is nothing new it happens everywhere in the UAE. Being a European you voiced your complaint, maybe maybe your voice will be heard. I doubt if it will be heard. The media also does not care. They are fully aware of the atrocities happening but they will not print your story. They are only there to report one or two accident cases or robbery that’s it.

Wish you luck with your campaign although I have my doubts if your voice will be heard.

Being a person with a Masters in HRM I would have expected that you would have thought a bit before you posted this on the web. No person in there right mind would hire a person to a company who firstly goes to their head of a department and asks them their salary in an open forum (doubt that this was the first thing you did wrong), secondly as a person with an HR background to sign a contract without reading it first, thirdly post something on the web to ensure that she would never secure a permanent position in an international company ( one that would know about the internet, and all they need to do is google her/his name).

I’ve known emirates and many people who work their for the better part of my life, work and life is hard no matter where you work.
May be Emirates is not the highest paying company but it certainly isn’t the worst paying company in the UAE, if u felt that it was so unfair to you I’m sure with your “Masters in Human resource Management” you could have worked somewhere else and left Emirates.

One person doesn’t make a company and seemingly you are using this blog to point a finger at one person to ensure that you can have a better sleep at night, but maybe you should in fact have a look at your actions and question yourself and if you were going about it the right way.

I work in HR for a company much larger than emirates and I can tell you for a fact that you are not the worst paid person in the UAE, and if you wanted pity from all the people who agreed with you on this blog ( listen well and you would probably hear the worlds smallest violins playing just for you).
Life is what you make of it, if you don’t like something about the way you are being treated somewhere go back to Europe and get the job that you so we’ll deserve.

For all those who are agreeing with most of the comments and are so fed up with the way they are treated may be you should go and work somewhere that would make you happier.

Either way these are my thoughts on what you have posted and good luck trying to secure a new opportunity wherever you may be.

The people who resigned left because it was too much for them. You chose to stay and from your blogs you had other warnings. This leaves a lot unanswered. I honestly, wish you all the best but you take a bigger blame in the matter. Employment is always at will and no one is being forced to work anywhere. If someone feels that they can get a better job somewhere else, then by all means, resign and get what that person thinks they deserve. Complaining will not do you any good.

Well besides all this, all departments working in the airport are suffering eg. Drivers, workers as well just that they don’t have a voice to speak. Grade 1 to grade8 don’t have any value or importance in the company as said by mgmt. They can replace us just like that. Also with such low salaries and less rest time staff are unable to cook their own food and take their own tiffin to work nor is the company giving any food vouchers unless you are doing overtime, staff have to spend their own money everytime to eat or drink, whereas food is thrown out every 5hours at the lounges it is seriously a criminal waste of food when people are deprived around the world. Thanks to crew staff atleast get free water without having to walk much to the offices to fill off the cooler. It is true many are scared to raise their voices because at the moment this is their only source of income with all the loans and troubles to provide for their families. It is honestly not the company it is the people working in the hirgher mgmt. who have made it the way it is today. Passengers keep complaining they hate the airline to the max may be 1 out of 50 give a good review. Something needs to be done asap before nothing is left. Dragana well done most of the check in and gates agents praise you for standing for all of us and being our voice. Thank you.

I think it might be true that they say they take 2 out of 10 from the interview, so tell the 2 if you don’t like you leave cause there are still 8 waiting to get the job. However, think about this, the 2 were taken for a reason, they were somehow better than the 8 to make them qualified for the job. If ek keep abusing their employees, all the 2s will leave and one day their choice will be limited and quality of their employee just keep failing, leads to more problems I guess.

I am currently an emirates staff, on my 6years i saw all the bad and worst things w emirates. The word itself becomes popular and those people who knew that emirates is nice to work or become part of it. But its totally wrong, its just the popularity. this are the things they should changed with their scheme, policies, standards:

    * about the salary which the one who just got hired w same position is more higher than the senior ones which is totally unacceptable.
    * pet allowance and furniture allowance to those grade 7 above
*abolish and make a keen observation for those new devices that theyre implementing in the airport like pda,s for handbge which is not totally helpful, scan gun at the sat or boarding podium that totally not working and now the samsung note that its just recently dustributed for some staff that they said. It can help the pax. These are all waste of money instead of getting ew devices why they cant improve all the systems/computer in all gates, and the money that they have used to this products/devices which can be additional increment for the staff..

*accomodation is totally horrible. Accom Allowance can not sustain a single person due to high rate outside the company accom.

I wish there will be changes in hr recruitment not only wasta can get the chance.

All the best dragana thankyou for voicing this out and gave us the guts to say something.

I dont have any choice yet but once i got i will definitely leave this selfish country.

Emirates Emirates Emirates…….this name really gets to my nerve now. I have heard so many things about this company and its reputation. The staff have attitude and its always that the Arabic staff are given better priviledges. They seem to work the least and throw their weight around with attitude as if they own the blooming airport. Staff nowdays make groups and hang around as they don’t feel welcomed by others because of the politics around. I have even heard of Emirates Cabin Crew girls doing bad stuff while doing their layovers. Last time i visited Singapore i was approached by a Portuguese Crew with a name starting with ” H ” but i couldn’t pronounce her name who said she remembered me from my flight and then next thing she was stuck to me the whole time she was there and wanted me to show her around Singapore and then wanted to fool around and buy her stuff. They portray such a cheap image and act like prostitutes when they travel around and visit places. At the airport they show attitude and glamour but once they are off their uniform they misbehave and drink and abuse the money they are paid for their stay. I agree it is their own money and its their right to spend it however they want but don’t keep saying the name Emirates everytime they are in a Club or a Public place.Emirates should seriously put someone under cover to keep an eye on guys and girls like this and take drastic measures against people like that who spoil their image and even add the name of Emirates.
I have been a lawyer in the UAE for several years and the most of the divorce cases I have handled are of Emirates Airline Cabin crews and Pilots. This just shows that there is no limit and level at what Crew do when they are out of UAE or even in the country. The rate of Infedelity in this company can never be put under control. I heard that even the management knows about these things but instead of putting a stop to it they get involved in it.
Anyway to conclude and stop back-biting about this company, I just want to say that Dragana has really shown courage by doing what she has done. Its people like her who make things easier for others and thus give them a little motivation to open up and not feel caged.

Your comment about emirates cabin crew is completely off topic and pretty much uncalled for. As a divorce attorney your job is to do what your being paid for, not go around judging people for incidents they’re going through.

“the rate of infidelity”…..are you insane? “This just shows that there is no limit and level at what crew do when they are out of the country” ???? The rate of infidelity for cabin crew married to pilots is a direct result of not being together for extended periods of time. ninety percent of the pilots are male so I highly doubt it’s the wife, or the girl that is the cheater. At least they have the guts to divorce each other as opposed to the rate of infidelity amongst nationals that have separate and secret apartments for their whores! Are you kidding me? This is most definitely a generalization: in the arab world, infidelity is normal, behind the scenes, and very active, much like homosexulaity. The difference is that in western culture it’s not tolerated and it’s acknowledged leading to divorce. Here it’s not spoken of and the women stay silent no matter how many whores their husbands sleep with. Please, look at a wider demographic, if you can manage to get the truth from the angelic pilots.

Sadly this is not the only division of Emirates where the employee a are suffering. At EGIT – Emirates a Group
IT we feel the same. I have been working at Emirates for almost 8 years at the same position. Employees who join after but have the influence and are able to go to a third degree level are promoted faster.

Not just that for 4 years they have been cutting an amount as insurance for my son and he was hospitalized early this year and DHS 600 was additionally cut off from my salary ….. They said the employee had to foot 10% or 600 AED, whichever is the highest.

We see Emirates purchasing more Boeings, Air buses, sponsoring all major events and teams but the employee increments are so meager we struggle with rents and school fees!

All awful stories. How sad. My family and I moved from Africa to the UAE almost 18 years ago now and I’ve always had an admiration for the country as well as this airline (which I’ve flown a few times too). Finding out about this has just given me new perspective on the company. Damn! How SHOCKING! Thank goodness for my current employer! I’d never put up with any of the horrific things that were mentioned, but then again, it is true there are those of us who find themselves stuck between a rock and a hard place with no choice but to endure. My heart goes out to you all guys. For real. As one of you said earlier …GOD IS WATCHING EVERYONE.

    …A FEW HIGHLIGHTS:

BULGARIAN: Seriously, what shit-hole did you crawl out of? That level of ignorance and spite is just crazy. You need help. SO not acceptable. That was incredibly low. You could have just done us all service by just ….oh i don’t know …NOT being born!

INDIAN: Bravo on that well articulated response to that 1st class idiocy.

FIDERIS: ….ummm I don’t know you sound like a unicorn dude. I mean you’re the only one with a positive post on here. Perhaps you’re REALLY one of the accused from the management team scrambling to strike some sort of balance given the amount of negativity attributed to this “evil” labeled management team? …hey, it’s possible!
Should this these complaints actually go viral enough, chances are they’ll make it to His Highness’ ear ….i mean just think how much information control there is in this country… I doubt this will go unnoticed and if there are still no changes down the line, well, that would mean only one thing:

    Message received, don’t care!

    Dear Dragana,

Thank you so much for posting this and letting everybody know what REALLY goes on with EK employees in Dubai.

I worked for Emirates contact center as an EK consultant in Dubai for one year and several months, enough time to see what really goes on with this company and the way they work. During this time i was also able to see how my roommates who were working as DNATA and EK check in counter agents worked. And i would like to say that what you write here in your letter is 100% true.

I have some things i would like to address also for other people that are considering moving to Dubai and work for Emirates.

I was also recruited abroad in SOUTH AMERICA and as you can imagine moving from South America to UAE is not just around the corner, we move half way across the planet to work for what we think is CABIN CREW LIFESTYLE AND IS NOT !!!!

When you google working for EK in dubai or lifestyle in Dubai what you can see mostly is cabin crew accommodations and lifestyle, i am not cabin crew and never worked as one for Emirates so i wont talk about what a cabin crew lifestyle is, although i was able to see it for myself cause i knew a lot of cabin crew in Dubai but thats another story. If you are hired to work as an EK CUSTOMER SERVICE AGENT IN THE CONTACT CENTER IN TAWASUL OR AS A EK CHECK IN AGENT AT THE AIRPORT your salary your accommodation and your way of living WONT be at all what you expect so please make sure to do some research before committing to work for EK and moving to the UAE.

    Some points to take notice:

BE COMPLETELY SURE OF YOUR SALARY AND HOW MUCH THEY ARE GOING TO PAY YOU CAUSE ONCE YOU SIGNED THAT CONTRACT YOU ARE DOOMED.
( When i was recruited abroad they offer me a higher salary to be discussed in a final skype interview that never happened and also languages allowances that never were paid or mentioned once i arrived in Dubai. I have a Bachelors degree also and a very good work experience and was expecting a lot more than 3500 Dirhams a month which is a joke in Dubai. So make sure to be completely sure about how much they are going to pay you and remember Dubai is not cheap. )

ASK ABOUT YOUR ACCOMMODATION – LOCATION AND BUILDINGS.
On the briefing in South America there was a presentation of Dubai, well of course they show you the glitz and glam Dubai stands for. What they are not going to show you is that you maybe be put in Alquouz ( the industrial zone of Dubai ) or Sarab which are not the 21st century tower in Sheik Zayed Road or the towers in Business bay for cabin crew accommodation.
EK customer service agents have different accommodations, much more basic and not what you see on youtube. Do not expect cabin crew accommodation, you will have a small room with a single bed and 3 roommates, 2 in one room and one single ( of course if you want the single you will have to pay more ).
And guess where all that money from your rent goes back to? yes EMIRATES.

WORKING LOCATION – WORKING HOURS ( VERY IMPORTANT )
One of the things that really shocked me when i arrived to my new job was that i found out that not only was going to be scheduled for a different daily working schedule, yes you read it correct OUR DAILY SCHEDULE CHANGED BY THE DAY done by “random” rosters which included NIGHT SHIFTS AND WEEKENDS that meant, that one day you could start at 7 am and the next one at 9 am then the next one at 12 at noon or 5 pm and then do 3 night shifts from 11pm to 724 am and then back to 9 am schedule and so on enough to make you insane and completely drive your sleeping cycle, eating cycle and social life completely to none, i wouldn’t sleep well, eat well or even be able to see my friends.

The NIGHT SHIFTS are no different from any other shift so do not expect one dirham more for working from 11pm to 830 am which was the time you will reach home. Is this the only country in the world where they dont pay you more for working AT NIGHT ?? i mean come on !! the whole thing about the sacrifice of working at night is that you are supposed to get paid overtime ! That doesn’t exist in the UAE so make sure you re going to be able to commit to this.

In terms of location you you either go to the Airport or Tawasul ( located in academic city ) both aprox 45 min away by bus. So add 2 hours of commute daily if you dont have a car. And you will pay for your own food at the premisses in our case in the call center you would have to pay 20 to 30 dhs per meal thats u to you, but that money that also is coming out of your pockets goes back to Emirates also, of course.

Now besides this issues in terms of salary, accommodation and working hours, if you are smart enough to be able to save some money you can travel the world for a very very low cost, so my advice is that if you are already in this situation make the best out of it and travel the most you can with staff tickets.

Overall we are the ones that make our own choices, lets not forget we were the ones who agreed to work for EK and we said YES, in my case i took it as a very interesting experience and tried to learn a lot about a country that is very different from where i come from, i was able to travel a lot too and pretty much made the best out of the worst.

Emirates in my opinion is a very squared minded company that needs to change a little bit in terms of structure, in my case it wasn’t for me cause i need a place where i could have more freedom and not that strict like VIRGIN lol (seriously Richard Branson is the Best), think about if this company fits you, and if you think it does do some serious research before saying yes to EK and make sure of what they are going to offer you, if you are going to make thousands or even millions of Dirhams for them, make sure they give you WHAT YOU DESERVE !

Thanks again Dragana for putting this on the table and hope is useful for other people looking for work for Emirates.

    Best Regards,

    V

      CNN CEO is IO …

This company is a Devil disguising in angels wings.

V again thank for speaking on behalf of the 600 (now less than 400) consultant in Tawasul.

Just few more things to mention :

      * no bus to tale staff from theur accomodation wich is deserted by all means to HQ

      * no contact with HR at all for emirates contact center agents, only them cock suckers being upgraded officers and trainers and they don’t actually know a thing. 0 education 0 background 0 multicultural and psychological understanding and 0 communication skills
      .

Ek contact Center agents and Ek check in agents are the front line and the Spine of emirates.

So if this will be seen i hope you consider the consequences of the way you treat your employees and if you shut Dragana
There is 50000 staff suffering maybe worse than Dragana.

P.S: arabic speakers paid 1500aed extra for arabic allowance, more breaks (prayer breaks) and in ramadhan they are entitled to 2 hrs OT that they an give up on
I am an arabic speaker and i deeply empathize with my non muslim or non arabic collegues who have 2 breaks 10 mins each n 30 min lunch break.
      ***
In my department if u report sick before or after a day off ull be deducted the whole days. Lately a collegue has been injured and had to be on sick leave 2 days before his weekly days off( they deducted frm him 4 days.) So if u r on vacation for a mh and you cannot come back to work the nxt day aftr ur leave.

Quick note: another category is totally used and abused in this company CSA (Cabin service assisstants) who take care of shower spa on board the pride of emirates A380.

Now if you want to know what really the passangers thinks of emirates?
Ask an airport agent or call center consultant…
      Thanks again V n Dragana

I was a cabin crew and it is not that different from the airport staff. The basic salary is law and what make us earn a bit more are the flying hours. But we do fly a lot. In Europe cabin crew by regulation cannot fly more than 900 hours a year, there by the manual and if someone has doubts about, cabin crew can fly up to 200 hours a month. I used to fly block 120 hours and have 130, 140 hours duty. During 15 hours flight like for example, to US or south America crew has 3 hours break, and if they dare to give more the purser can face serious problems, because an idiot that took the break and had the opportunity to rest will report the Purser. The purser will face high punishment like being demoted or even fired. Perth flights are extremely long, 10 hours fight and crew are allowed to have 45 min break SITTING and crew are forbidden to read because according to the Mr. Griffts passengers do not like to see crew reading in the jump seats! 🙂
Mr. Kevin Griffts is an incompetent that used to work for the flight ops and due to his stupid rules ( that by the way did not work with the pilots) was sent to service delivery and Terry Daily in my humble opinion is not more than an alcoholic that used to drive drunk in Dubai and did not get jail sentence because of his position and his relation with the Sheik.
At the training college very often you find someone to take care of your life, tell about your lipstick and any other stupid thing.
People report each other for nothing, warning letters are given like is no tomorrow and the seniors no matter how wrong they are they are always right.
In an Emirates aircraft everybody has attitude. I have heard myself from I purser that I was not paid to think. And I am honest to say, in case of an emergency I would not be paid to save him if required… Yes cabin crew sometimes take so much shit that we get nasty… yes very nasty!
If you get to work late, managers loose their time asking you to go to the office on the 3rd floor to explain why you are late…. stupid isn’t it…. well if are late is because you did not arrive on time! simple. But than you have to go there on your days off, that by the way are not many and you get a deduction on your salary because of your absence 🙂
When you go for a disciplinary hearing like Dragana, they treat you like a criminal. There are 3 people in the room: One HR your manager and you. They meeting is conduct as if you are being interrogated by the CIA because you shot the Sheik. yes… like a criminal!
I had an SFS once called Farzana Sultana ( From Bangladesh), that picked up a fight because of crew sandwiches. A crew for economy class wanted to have some extra sandwiches from Business class, and she did not want to give because according to her they were business class sandwiches.
Catering is exact, and the despite of so many complains, Mr. Griffts expect the crew to make magic on board and give the best inflight service. Because is not him that have to lick asses and isn’t him the one that need to deal with complains during the entire flight. His job is to write non sense remarks on his blog inside the crew portal and post pictures from his holidays in the same blog.
If you are sick, you are going to fly sick unless you get a responsible doctor at the clinic, that stand up for you. Many doctor resign because they do not agree in putting people unfit to flight on line and according to the company’s policy they need to be on line as soon as possible. Also you do not have peace to be sick because the Attendance team get on top of you pressing you to go back to work… If you have a broken leg or something serious you are not allowed to leave base, unless they give you authorization to do so. And if you are sick for more than 45 days you do not receive your basic. so you get in Dubai with no money, you better have your reserve if not you wont have money to eat!
And if you go to work and feel sick there you will get an Absent because you are suppose to call sick 3 hours before departure. If you signed in, wearing your uniform and u fall sick at the briefing you are ABSENT! Than of course you have to go to the office to explain why you got sick! hilarious no…
I had a friend that after arriving in Casablanca, felt in the bus stair and broke his leg. According to the company it was not industrial injury, he was not careful enough. But than I ask : Strange that I am not allowed to use my mobile phone while in uniform, but if I felt from the crew bus, wearing my uniform just after a flight isn’t considered industrial injury… nice no…

I am now in a very good place in my life…I am no longer in employment because I vowed to never put myself in someone’s power play plot ever again…I swore to be the boss of me….I thank u guys for that because I am now exactly that….I thank my Lord everyday that I was able to cancel that visa without any plan…but on reaching my home country…immediately God laid out a plan for me…It was the best decision ever. I want to encourage those still there….make ur own plans…you only have one life to live…..so live it with all the happiness. No one and no amount of money in this world will make u happy. .

    Dear Dragana,
I salute you for standing up for yourself and raising your concers, which are shared by many (following the comments below)!
However,I am not entirely sure where is it going to lead you.And hopefully ,the response (if any),will help you come to terms with the situation.
Dubai and ark are highly multicultural and you have not been long enough to integrate.Unfortunately,it seems like you had an unrealistic expectations ,which led to your disappointment, too.
You have signed your employment contract prior coming to Dubai,so that makes you aware of salary,Accomodation ,working hours …
Plus, your question about someone else’s salary was provocative and unprofecional. Nevertheless ,if you check your manual /HR ,you will be able to find what salary and benefits are alocated to Grade 8( or whatever Grade the concerned supervisor is),therefore no need to question it.
    Good Luck with your quest!
I will happily follow the development of your case.

Dragana, I’d say this is a very good post. Though it informs us only about what you’ve faced or what you felt like people around you face everyday. Bigger pictures is many companies do this and well it all comes down to a human. Humans are arseholes. Me, You, everybody. We do what pleases us the most. You made this blog hoping for a change. If it happens you’ll probably be very happy, if it doesn’t happen you’ll still feel proud of leaving a mark behind and knowing you tried doing something good. Change or not I suppose if we can’t change another person, least we can do is change ourselves. Remember you just don’t have to become another “Anoma M.” When life gets better for you, make sure you make it better for someone else. We could do more preventing another Anoma; off the planet.

Dragana, so there are lots of comments and issues in your letter/blog that really make me question the credibility of what you are trying to express.

I quote from your blog you have a degree in human resources. Putting a side my personal view on why you would sign up as a check in staff in an airline when that is clearly not your field, I wonder how you can be confused as to thinking you were dismissed for asking higher management how much they get paid.
The reason I question this is I’m sure in HR101 they mentioned that unless it’s a high risk concern, you would need to be warned several times before your employment is terminated! This goes without saying that I assume you would have had several warnings on other matters before you actually got dismissed!

No 2- I refer to your comment about feeling like your in a trapped cage and expected to leave you family and move to Dubai! I think anyone with half a kind would know that this is YOUR choice! You decide to take up a job opportunity because you believe it’s for your beat interest, so I think blaming emirates or higher management is probably ridiculous!

3rd- I believe that if someone wants to get a promotion, move higher up in their field the need to work for it!!!!! You can’t expect to be in a job for a while, not show improvements and expect to be promoted! That’s not how the world works!
Instead of actually finding fault with the system and wondering how much others earn you could have put that effort into actually bettering yourself to achieve the goals you wanted to achieve.

It also should make you think; there is a reason behind your boss being your boss, a reason behind higher management having te people they do! It’s because they have earned those roles and positions! They probably started just like you and I did! Don’t be quick to judge!

All I want to say is spend less time and effort writing these and fighting to get out of situations when you can actually look at improving yourself and looking where you went wrong!

And to all of you writing and commenting on this, who seem to work at emirates and not happy: I recommend you take the advise that dragons was given and leave!

Emirates is the number one airline in the world and I would say that hands down! Emirates has a top class reputation for their service and it’s really not fair that people like you get their personal views to form opinions on others!

    Like

    • Anonymous

She has had several other warnings before she was issued this termination. The inappropriate behaviour is not the only reason for sure. EK cannot so that!

If you are a Masters degree holder in HRM, why would you even sign a contract as a customer service agent and agree to work for EK? And for your kind info check in agents all over the world do the same job of checking in and tagging bags. Nothing to feel bad about!

      Like

      • exemployeed

Yes, I did have two warning previously. All of them were punishments for speaking up, since this is not my first time speaking up.

This is why there is a culture of punishments and fear: if you speak up once, you get punished until you get terminated.

And this blog is not about me. It is about human and labour rights.

Some of us really care about the planet’s future.

      Hi Ruby,

I have to say, your reply is quite shocking, as in my opinion you are only looking at one side, and this makes me question YOUR credibility.

First thing i would like to ask, are you part of Emirates management staff? cause personally, from your letter, you are clearly sticking up for a company and know some inside information, or you are just talking out of your ass!. let me break down your reply for you with your very rude numbers!!

No1 – “my personal view on why you would sign up as a check in staff in an airline when that is clearly not your field”.. I myself run and own a recruitment agency, and clearly the name Dragana tells me she is from Eastern Europe (im not saying she is, but i know as much as you do about her). She has studied HR but most probably cannot find a job in HR, if you had any idea how hard it is to get into the working world in Europe after Uni, and what its like especially for Eastern Europeans, then i am sure your ignorant questioning would not have been there. (just in case you are wondering, i am from Malta and not from Eastern Europe). On another note, what’s wrong with her trying something new? i interview so many graduates that study Uni as they were forced too cause that is the “Norm”, they never followed there dream! maybe this was Dragana’s dream, who are you to belittle her for choosing this?

No2 – “The reason I question this is I’m sure in HR101 they mentioned that unless it’s a high risk concern, you would need to be warned several times before your employment is terminated! This goes without saying that I assume you would have had several warnings on other matters before you actually got dismissed!” – I will ask again, do you work for Emirates?

No 3 – “I refer to your comment about feeling like your in a trapped cage and expected to leave you family and move to Dubai! I think anyone with half a kind would know that this is YOUR choice! You decide to take up a job opportunity because you believe it’s for your beat interest, so I think blaming emirates or higher management is probably ridiculous!”

Yes i agree, it is her choice, but do you know her background? do you know if it is as easy as you are saying it is? do you know if she needs to send money for her family to survive as without her money they might not? do you know anything about her situation for you to comment so rudely?

A question for you, have you been spoiled in life and dont know what it means to struggle? if so, please read a bit or travel, open your eyes, grow up, and most importantly think before you act, because you dont know her story to question her choices!!

No 4 – “I believe that if someone wants to get a promotion, move higher up in their field the need to work for it!!!!! You can’t expect to be in a job for a while, not show improvements and expect to be promoted! That’s not how the world works!
Instead of actually finding fault with the system and wondering how much others earn you could have put that effort into actually bettering yourself to achieve the goals you wanted to achieve.”

Again, do you work with emirates? in management? as here you are implying that she has not worked hard enough or she has not shown improvements!!

Is this how the world works in your eyes? Clearly you are living in your own world, please burst your bubble and come back to earth!!

And your advise to Dragana, really?

Dragana, finding faults in the system is not bad, if you use your head, find faults, make a game plan for them faults, and then rest your case with them faults. Show them how to fix them other than just telling them what there is. Most people actually get promotions by doing this, and many have realised how capable they are after sticking up for them self. So in my opinion, you did well.

No 5a – “It also should make you think; there is a reason behind your boss being your boss, a reason behind higher management having the people they do!” – Are you a boss at emirates? and do you really believe what you just wrote? I agree there is always a reason behind your boss being your boss, but that reason could be, preference? Relation? dont be fooled into believing work is just about how hard you work, Unfortunately, in some cases its not, and with major companies that employ high volumes of staff, its most likely never the case.

b – “It’s because they have earned those roles and positions! They probably started just like you and I did! Don’t be quick to judge!” – again, impressive, how old are you? because the way you speak is like management coming from the 1960’s, and what do you mean by, “started just like you and I did” – do you work with Emirates?

Please lets emphasize on something you said, – “Don’t be quick to judge!” – PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH!

now i think we can stop here, the last bit of your letter clearly states you work with them or are involved in some way. Me myself, I have nothing to do with Dragana or with Emirates, but when i see comments like yours, its amazes me how you can sit there and just knock a person down for sticking up for what they believe in! If you are happy at Emirates, good on you, maybe other people are not and want to express how they feel. They did not attack you in any way personally, they stuck up for what they believe in and you attacked them for doing so. That sounds like the “fear” Dragana mentions emirates management puts on their staff! Am i saying its true, i dont know i dont work there, but from your reaction im ready to put money on it as they say!!!

Now Ruby, go in peace, let live, if you are happy, stay happy, don’t knock people for trying to make themselves happy. And once we can start doing this, we will live in a much better place i can assure you!

      Love!

Actually, Luke, my colleagues and I have tried to tell the management HOW to fix the problems.

A few months ago we sent them an e-mail with listed problems and suggestions for changes.

A little or nothing was changed. Instead, they have prosecuted one person who they thought was the initiator of staff’s loud dissatisfaction – me.

This is why this blog is created.

Ruby, You are seriously delusional. Emirates goes to different countries to recruit people and sells the LIES!!! Once you get here, you get continuously strung along by half-truths and empty promises. I’m sure Dragana thought to leave on many occasions but because Emirates is synonymous with the word LIE, she tried to make the best of it and finally had enough. And just for your info: we are not the number one airline. Look it up. And as far as your idiotic advice about just leaving: people start lives here, they take loans, they try to make the best of things, they can’t “just leave”. It’s not like sitting in a restaurant and not liking the view. You hope for the best, you work hard, but at some point you get fed up. Then you leave. Btw, would you have told the Jews to “just leave” Germany if they weren’t happy?

Departments like Corporate communications and CENTRAL SVCS also has this discrimination. They really need to buck up in terms of the higher management interacting with their sub ordinates. RESEPECT is not earned in such departments, especially with people like Boutros Boutros need to get to the ground. I wish Mike Simon & Steve Wheeler talked some sense into him. But that’s the story everywhere… in a subtler way.

Honestly, things cant be perfect anywhere so the only point you should highlight is being sacked and no where to go. All the best!

Dragana – What next ? Good Luck with your future ! You have done, asked, reacted, responded whatever way you wanted. From what i can understand from you and subsequent comments is that there could be a far reaching and a genuine problem. I don’t think One person, your boss can be deemed responsible for all your problems. Its got something to do with your systems, planning and overall operations. You along with your colleagues, immediate boss and possibly a few higher ups could have addressed this better and found definitive solution. Its not a generally accepted norm to ask for someones salary, definitely not so in public. It might have been inappropriate. Is it really necessary to post a picture and defame a person in public ? These are my opinions, you know your circumstances better.

There are always better things in store for you !

Emirates – Is a responsible company which nurtures and enriches the life of thousands. Being the visionary he is, I am sure HH Sheik Ahmed and his team would understand factual problems and if necessary take necessary action. We don’t have anyone from emirates or their PR making any statements or clarifications. I am sure their HR would have been involved and been consulted before they took an extreme step. But if it were only for asking a bosses salary, though she might have been wrong, a good manager should have been able to respond better. But the actual question they face is are there more Draganas ?

People might come and go, but Good Organizations will always remain !

There is more to this story than what Dragana states.

I worked for Emirates/Dnata for over 17 years, left to further my career, we worked in difficult conditions too, but when I see where the company is now I can say that I am proud of its achievements.

I never dared ask my seniors what their salaries were, and should Dragan be a little more concienscious she should know that the salary scales are well known and in the manuals too according to grade and function.

Dnata does not need the Draganas of this World and degrees do not make the bishop, but behaviour does.

As to those complaining about Dubai, well, I suggest you go work in Saudi or Qatar.

Lets not be specific. Lets be general. There was an article maybe like 2-3 years back stating all skilled labors i.e carpenters etc will earn 4K a month. Lel wut? Engineers etc would earn 12K a month. Lel wut? (I’m currently a fresh graduate and unemployed cause “No Experience / Shitty Pay”) Expo 2020 was won by Dubai but I really hope they lose the bid to host it. Expo 2020 means increasing of rents etc and that means what you earn is what you’ll end up giving back to this country. SALIK? Really? Dubai-Sharjah Salik? It has only made the Emirates road worst. 6 AM in the morning and it is still horrible. 5 PM evening and wow bad. 4 AED per pass? Really? you make lets say 8 AED from Mamzar gate per car going in and out of Dubai, yet you cannot build another road to connect Dubai, Mamzar to Sharjah? 8 Million AED a day is what you get from Mamzar gate alone and where does all that money really go? Lambo? Ferrari? Really? Do Dubai police really need all those cars in their fleet? Why not just charge people during peak hours for salik instead of making it 24/7? Cause no you think we shit money. Well anyways I’m in this country for 3 years and then I’m gonna go to some place better. I just hope your people will face the same faith in the future maybe not in the coming 100 years cause you piss oil, but anytime after that. Then we all will be equal? K. Thx. Bye. Oh and occasionally at least to the companies you own i.e “Emirates Airlines” etc. go and ask the low wage earning employee what has to be done to make it better and tell him to be truthful as he would be to his friend and not to a ruler and you’ll probably unearth the darkest thoughts from him. Remember change now before it is too late.

Seems like someone forgot the email they sent round to the WHOLE of emirates slagging off everyone left right and centre!

You want to talk about slavery like some sort of martyr? Go and start up a website about how thousands of the people who built structures in the searing heat out here then had to go home (knowing that they are ACTUALLY stuck I.e will never get their passports back) to a small room that they share with 10 other people in the same situation as them, only to sleep 3 hours and get up to do the whole thing again the next day. The thousands of workers who eventually found the only way out was by killing themselves so they could get some credible amount of money to send back to their families that they never had to chance to say goodbye to. Yeah that’s an ACTUAL use of the word slavery, not in some bullshit context like this when someone; who had accommodation, transport, health care etc paid for, decides to throw a hissy fit when they have to work a couple more hours on a 4 by 4 schedule. Go ask most people working five 12 hour shifts a week then having 2 days off what they’d rather have and I’m sure they’d rather take the 4 day option. Working for an airline like Emirates is naturally going to be difficult and the shift patterns unpredictable, it’s 24hours and situations arise where the only way not to lose millions is to work overtime and keep the flights and passengers on schedule. I’m not saying id love doing overtime, however I’m a realist and know that if there wasn’t forced overtime, no one would do it. Also I’m guessing you didn’t do forced overtime on every single one of your offs? For months on end? No? So you still have one more day off than I do, maybe I should create a website about it so other “anonymous” people can write tat as well.

I’ve legitimately seen less petulance from 5 year olds.

Good luck to Dragana, the future is always brightest after the darkest moment (paraphrasing Batman there)

I feel so sorry for you Dragana and at the same time, I am very proud of your courage. Don’t think that you are the only one who was aggrieved here well, a lot of staff with different scenarios had it too. And don’t think what ‘seniors’ are doing from iniquity and injustice is going to pass without punishment, maybe you don’t know how god had punished a manager as he used to aggrieve his staff in a very bad way by playing with their PM’s, giving them unjustified warnings to ban them from promotions, making HR hearing to those who refused ‘loyalty’ and creating some ugly stories…etc the worst thing that one of our ‘closed’ stations got 2 warnings when he was ASM there and he was almost fired!!! Unfortunately, this manager is not willing to learn from his mistakes and from the ‘Warning’ that god gave him, he is still the same. I don’t know if you can remember our ex colleague, a supervisor in baggage department who never stopped feeding EKAS with his ideas and made many successful projects that were stolen from him by managers?? This supervisor had a sever medical case on duty threatening his life, he was rushed to hospital and then he was sent back to his country to terminate him instead of providing treatment. The worst part is, EK had medically terminated him at the same time, filing a case against him “Escaping from the sponsor” to let him face his destiny alone there without giving him the concession of “Medical Termination” as per EK policy!!! I will try to get in tough with him to tell his story.

I just listened to the conversation of this forum, I’m also an employee for EK. my opinion is Dragana is beyond the limits with higher levels. you did a stupid thing, Any of company there are rules limits always with the superiors and the minor staff. I’m not telling you that EK is perfect. there are some problems. earlier i was comment on this, but Dragana i have to say sorry for you, i feel like you lost your way, you tried to become volunteer or representative for your friends, at the end you lost your job , nobody helps on you get on this. all the departments they have roster OT, it’s some kind of a forcing (Hidden force). and the promotions, leave it all depend on favors of the each admins. i joined as EK4 and got promoted EK5 after 4 years , i worked as acting EK5 for nearly 2 years, but i see some are gets promoted after their 6 month even without experience, knowledge etc. it’s just the favor, cz there’s a border from the beginning, you can see who really runs the EK group if you are search. but these we cant talk about or go against with a big company like this, a hotel never ends up cause a broken plate.

Well, you see, sometimes you just have to have dignity and freedom instead of a job.

My friend i know that nobody wants to close it.. i just gave an example. even when we joined here 2010 Idama is a desert, do u know that shuttle to MOE has no timing, sometimes they stop the service. but we complaint as a group , we have sent mails finally they fixed the timing. they accommodate with mixed nationalities it’s much difficult but we complaint on it, then they changed us,that is small example for a freedom and dignity of a job.Dragana was totally out of control at the end, you might be think that it’s the freedom that can ask someone’s salary in public or in a forum like this. she was right to asked about the OT and break, increments. but it’s not the way to ask. it’s not freedom or dignity what ever .. they just consider as Dragana was against them. and here i don’t want to argue with anyone or am not taking the EK side. i just written what i see, cz i listened to the conv 2-3 times. nobody volunteer except this lady Dragana, in one stage she was asking from other staffs regarding these matters, nobody replies..

I work in the travel industry and i was once offered the same job by Emirates . I declined because the pay was very low and being a travel agent, i could get much more salary working with a good travel company Working as an airport check in staff is one of the most stressed and underpaid job . Why do u think airline staffs go on strike in every other country ?? There is only glamour in this job but the salaries are really not that great. So im not surprised that Dragana is dissappointed but did she not know what job she is getting into ?? She says she has a Masters in Human resource. Why would someone with such a degree work as a check in staff at an airport?? Well, if its ur situation that got you there then you cannot expect too much can you ?? And for those people who think the managers are responsible for all the misery , please understand that these managers are not the ones who decide the salaries of their juniors. It is the higher management. So if ur unhappy with what your getting go to them . In short, stop whining and find another job if you dont like what you are getting. The world isnt a pretty place. Deal with it !

There are so many things that make you sign the contract and accept their offer….I would say that the people who make the interview are just giving you false info about promotion that happens almost every year…good accommodations and living in Dubai….free tickets for you and your family….etc so, they build a luxury life based on their dream and at the end they would say “This paper that you have to sign is just a paper but, actual life is different”. Maybe you are not in the picture but, how many employees did cancel their contract when they saw their accommodation or I would say, their desert filthy accommodation!!! How many ran away because they could not sponsor their husbands or wives!! How many got fed up from their false promises that after a year, you could join the cabin crew!!! They say…come on.. its only 1 year…they hide the fact that each day, you would die a thousand times from passengers and managers. My friend…I can assure you if you listened to them and stay…you would be screwed as you would end up in loans!!! This is Emirates Airline policy.

I’m seeing a very pro-Dragana or an anti-Dragana stance in this forum. I’ll try to be as neutral as possible. As an ex-employee of EK myself there’s a lot to be told and a LOT to be fixed. I left because there was more drama than work and that everything depended on your manager’s mindset. It’s a mix culture company hence very very different from the UK where I’m from.

Generalizing EK as a horrible org isn’t correct. But some of the departments there and the way they treat certain staff is unacceptable – EKAS being a perfect example. The pays are low and the hours are long (which is common amongst other agents in the airline business mind you) I think the sad part about ek is what they promise to staff in lower grades. Unless you work a good grade say 8+, it is very difficult to move up the ladder let alone get good benefits. The staff housing for grades below this is mediocre. Dubai is definitely not a cheap place to live and yes they should explain this in advance. And yes NO ONE especially a DVP have the right to say “leave if you don’t like it”. That’s horrible – this is EK not any other airline. On the other hand it was a great company to work for except some managers. Met wonderful people and learned a lot. But in my case I was lucky – I wasn’t at the bottom of the ladder and was treated well.

Also Dragana your issues were handled awkwardly. Things like “14 hour days” including your time to work isn’t acceptable. No one in this planet includes travel time as part of their work time!! Asking the DVP directly about her salary wasn’t really called for – everyone’s salary is confidential. Only in the west do CEOs etc display salary NOT everywhere else.

Aside from the 2 pitfalls it is also very commendable what you are trying. Sadly it is very difficult because Dubai and specially Emirates Airlines is a way too big of an organization to “care” about their bottom string staff. Just like Anoma many of EK higher ups think that way. It is that attitude that needs to change in order to make a happier workforce. I think they need to change how they deal with their staff and give them better opportunities to advance. It is critical for them to last. I wish you the best and I would recommend using social media outlets specially twitter and Facebook to share your objective. The audio you have is key so share it because even if they don’t change it is embarrassing for such DVPs to even speak like they way she spoke. That is horrendous

    Good luck!

But than I ask : Strange that I am not allowed to use my mobile phone while in uniform, but if I felt from the crew bus, wearing my uniform just after a flight isn’t considered industrial injury… nice no…
Keep in mind: If you want to survive with EK you need:
    – Stomach : To digest all the shit from the managers, seniors, crew and pax ( I did fly for other airlines and I can assure, passengers they do not do in other airlines what they do over there – do you know why? Because crew like Airfrance and Lufthansa if you treat them like maids or if u do not behave they are going to tell you off and off load you!
    – To keep your mouth shot: If you don’t say what they want to hear you will get in trouble.
    – Always say yes, and be considering but do not expect management be considering towards you. remember, you are just a number.

Ah not to forget, Union are strikes are forbidden in UAE. Do you know why? Because Union of people make people stronger. And in UAE is convenient to have alienated people. Its easier to deal with it.

If someone have any doubts, please let me know, I did save every email I receive. And I myself came to point of stress that if people would give me any shit I would give them 3 times more. For they learn that not everybody is stupid and to deliver trays was not the only thing I could do. The opposite from what a purser said on the briefing ( Mrs. Ivy Ilao), yes I can think and I do not need her to think for me.

I used to work at Manila airport under the same airline. I experience the same thing with dnata. I know how it feels to work with all your passion and can’t get what you really deserve. What’s worst is that we’re under a sub-contractor agency that makes our salary more even lower and we don’t have any benefits. I’m not comparing Philippines’ salary to Dubai for I know that there’s really a huge difference. But just to inform you, as a Check-in agent of the said airline I only earn 250php per flyt if you convert it into USD it’s just 6 US dollars. Can you imagine that? I am paid with a very low salary which is 50php per hour, I think I only earned 8,000 php per month back then. Yes 8,000php or 179 USD per month, not enough to pay my own accomodation, electricity bill and other necessities. We do not have free accomodation, free food or anything for free, that’s why I decided to resign even if I love Emirates and my work so much. We have a roster like 4am till 9am in the morning and you have to be back at 1pm in the afternoon until 6pm for the next flight. There’s also 7pm until 12am and you need to wake up again at 4am. My body clock gets confused lol. I think they should really change the way they treat their employees. And Emirates should check its top management system before all the staff gives up. I always wanted to be part of the Emirates family since my training days in Dnata, but with what I’ve experience, I am very disappointed the way they handle people. I gave up my dream! From my supervisor to the top management. Very Disgusting! I salute the writer of this open-letter for being brave! I also want to thank you for giving justice to my resignation. Thank you. 😉

This is both impressive and admirable Dragana. Your courage and frankness are worthy of mention and, exceptionally, I feel it is important that you name names and provide the audio, so the dark truth cannot be swept away by overpaid media consultants. A considerable number of EK employees would agree with you, and I know you will rise above some of the cheap and petty criticism offered on this page.

I would agree with others that it may have been less than tactful to ask after this Sri Lankan individual’s salary – this isn’t part of the culture. It also may be the case that your strong personality and frank questions (which clearly needed asking, but others were too afraid to). However this particular individual is well known as a coward and a bully using ignorant methods that have no place in a (supposedly)progressive global company that is an important ‘soft power’ ambassador and global brand. EK is not some cheap carrier like Easyjet or Air Arabia. It is EK, the equivalent of what BA was in the 1980s.

I do not work for Emirates, but both I and others are married and related to those who are. Many individuals from my expat community are married in and we see the strain, hear of the conditions or see it written into the faces and nerves of loved ones and manifested in sickness and injuries. Nobody expects to become a millionaire working in the travel industry, but false promises and reassurances vanish into nothing – bonuses repeatedly cancelled despite exponential growth. Gruelling work that is both physically and intellectually demanding (and requires much diplomacy) is treated with disdain and dismissal. Complex and badly-mapped shifts (late/earlies etc) add to the strain on bodies and nervous systems.

The wages and allowances fail to keep pace with average costs in Dubai. In effect, pay is decreasing whilst demands on staff go way up. And the new calibre of managers they are bringing in (like this Amona or whoever she is) typify the degree-qualified but common sense / empathy-free ignorants who are somehow leap-frogging the hard workers to get positions of power.

When you are supposedly picking the cream of talent from across the worl, ‘if you don’t like it just leave’ simply is not good enough. This Amona falls short of EK standards, and must go.

Anyone who thinks that all managers are there because they somehow deserve to be – or that those at the bottom end don’t graft – seriously need to wake up and get a life. Rarely in life is effort and talent linked to reward – just look at most of the European Governments, and compare with those who build street-level charities out of nothing with raw guts and enterprise. This does seem to reach a new level with EK, and a lot of talk reaches us about the unsavoury attitudes and methods of Indian management – cheaper than expats or Emiratis.

Like a trickle that becomes a flood, or like a tiny rash that becomes a raging fever, the truth will out. Emirates will realise that happy staff make for happy customers – and that if the company looks after them, they’ll return the favour. Or they’ll fail.

I am a professional expat who works in recruitment – and I know that Europe is an employment wasteland. Also many individuals desire a change of scene or make the bold choice to try something different, or follow a life’s dream.

So there are any number of reasons why someone who would be working out of their original degree discipline – or would be in low-grade work, where 7-8 years back they’d have been straight into management. There are any number of reasons why someone would quit a well-paid mind-numbing job to try their hand at flying if that was their dream.

The truth will out Dragana, the circle will come around, and while you may have played the odd card a little out of tune, your honesty and courage and strength of character will drive you on to better things – you’ll look back at this and laugh at the haters. And the pin-head of light coming that you’ve poked through, will in time become a broad shaft of sunshine under which all the rotten stuff will shrivel. Good on you girl.

Just truthful sister. As Anonymous says – and in a previous engineering job, I worked with many fine Indians, Pakistanis, Sri Lankans and Bangladeshis – and there is undoubtedly and definitely something in their caste-driven society that seems to feed into an unpleasant and even dictatorial management style.

Everything can be made to sound good compared with something else. A top restaurant serving you slop food would not tell you that refugees in Africa are starving. A personnel manager for Emirates Airlines should not be making inappropriate comparisons with manual workers.

You are not labourers. You are diplomats. diplomats for the world’s top airline, and a key diplomatic power tool for a country that is steadily coming up as a regional player. And eventually if you treat your people badly you pay a bitter price – just look at BA, crippled by strikes, the cream of its staff gone, and cleverly hovered up by Virgin – a ruthless player too, but one smart enough to treat its people pretty right.

Again, I wish someone had been around to polish down some of the rough edges in your (broadly well written) email and give it a limited amount of sugar-coating and subtlety without pulling the punches.

But make no mistake that you have done the right thing, refused to bow, a real case of ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’ – and I’m so glad things are looking up for you.

At the risk of sounding a little crude, all brown-nosers get their come-uppance and when it comes it hits much harder than they are expecting. Many such people were culled in the economic crisis in Europe – and find that their people styles make it impossible to hold down the few jobs that come along later, when you cannot get away with having everyone hate you.

        Well Done!

Management run by Indian, just pathetic. You know why?? because their skills are to talk, lick the boss’s ass and cover their asses up. They will do dirty games to control the battlefield. Not all of them, but most of them. India was poor country even now in some parts. Therefore, once they have something that they will never have in their country, they starts to forget who they are and start to do shitty things. for the record of their poorness is India is the most corrupted country in the world means corruption is now their natural culture.

One can write, scream at the top of your voice, go to the media etc etc everything will fall on deaf ears. THEY JUST DON’T CARE. They know if one leaves hundreds will line up for that job for half salary. They are taking advantage of the people who have problems in their country. No one likes to leave their family and country and go to work in another country. They will keep behaving in this manner with people from third world countries. They cannot dare to do the same with certain European countries. If you recollect how the american Shezanna Cassim’s family got him out of jail. It was possible only because he was american. There is a Lord up there who is observing everything. Every evil will be punished sooooooon.

I was employed with Ansett airlines in Australia and the Federal Government with an associated group of other airlines on the board or Ansett/Air NZ, decided the fate of Ansett and gave the freedom of travel to Richard Branson and Virgin. 17 thousand employees cannot get a job and virgin has a secret agenda NOT to employ ex ansett staff…. First and foremost, your courage is commendable and it was an intelligent move to leave the UAE prior to initiating this crusade against injustice and unfair treatment in the business organisation which employed you.

Having said that, there is an addage which says, “One has to learn how to pick his battles.”

The country is headed by powerful families who own most of the prominent business organizations. These same individuals also have positions in the country’s government and law making entities. I take for example the current Ministry of a Justice who owns a local law firm (Which uses his name) This law firm of his doesn’t pay employees overtime. What do you think will happen if an employee of that law firm complains to the MOL? Do you think the MOL will take the side of one person who complains? The reality is we are only visitors of this place and things will be as they are. Everyone does whatever they want. The intelligent move would be to work, save and leave.

every thrice a year I visit the Aviation college give those stupid and same repeated question’s of english exams 100s of cvs and photos attached also since the opening of new head quaters more than 50 times given exams there but but but Never got selected
in those 10 yrs ive changed 3 jobs where ever I got better opportunity I joined but my heart for emirates airline never went off neither I choosed any other airline to fly
what I want to say is that the human resource of emirates airline is corrupt and racists
many of my friends who I think are not better than me got the job through bribing or either the manager is from their home town and they get easily selected how come im not selected and 3 companies loved my interview my cvs and wanted me to carry on even insisted me to wait for promotion
I always pass the 3 stages of english test with final interview but finally when the result comes they say im fucking short listed and they never call back or answer my call
This is wrong and I truely agree with the blog that this lady was screwed for being honest

10 years im applying even for the post of driver which I just tried even though I was graduate , I got rejected this is shit sorry bull shit

The bottom line is emirates airline are taking bribes and hiring ppl also they hire relatives or colleagues friends like that which is not fare
im not jealous but this is the fact
if you all notice that daily at emirates headquaters career center 1000s of ppl come give test for 3 hrs approx.and by 11 am to 12 noon are told sorry ur not selected or short listed
the bribe ones or reference ppl are selected
    this is the real truth
    our dreams shatter this way
I hope my message is clear to all
human resource u are all waste junks who are wasting time by time passing and taking good cash at the end of the month
Open your eyes and think that God will ask a question one day about the misuse of positions u all have done

I was just thinking, how you can say “no private life” when you have 15 days off in a month? Furthermore, I noticed on your roster that you were scheduled to do overtime only once in a month, so not bad considering you have 14 days off.

I wish to have shifts like this, I work in hospitality business and normally work 12 hours or more for 5 days with 2 days off.

    Like

    • dragana1981

Well, it will be my pleasure to explain this fact. When you are working 4 by 4 roster, you work two days day shift and next two days night shift. On your first day off you sleep whole day because you came back home at noon. You last day off you have to go to sleep in early afternoon, because you have to get up at 3am in order to reach work at 5am, for example (this is your two days off gone on sleeping and recovering your body and brain). On your other days off you are either scheduled with forced overtime (some people get even three per month) or you go to overtime voluntarily, because your basic salary is too small for your needs.

All the night shifts are until 8, 9 or 10am (so these are not night shifts, but night-morning shifts. Normal nightshift could only last until 5, 6 or 7am).This makes you extremely exhausted (lets not forget that Dubai airport is one of the busiest in the world, and that every each of stuff has to deal with couple of hundreds of passengers per 10 or 12 hours shift) and you spend your days off (when you are not going for overtime) to get rest from night shifts and mentally demanding passengers (which EK spoiled in order to maintain the image of the best airline among customers; all of that on the expense of staff who have to deal with angry passengers who have to wait in lines for ages).

When you do get your salary at the end, you buy food, send it home, pay internet, and then you are left with very little money to pay for a taxi and go and have a coffee with your friends (who are often working in different shifts and have different days off than you do, since rosters are changed very often and you always find yourself in the same roster with unknown people, and all your friends gone to different rosters). So, you, almost, don’t go out.

If you make a mistake, or they think you made a mistake, they often call you for a meeting on your day off.

Guests can not stay in your company provided accommodation after 1am.

This is how you, almost, have no personal life.

I used to be employed with EK for 8 yrs in Cabin, leading function. And I have to agree with Dragana´s post, as it seems to be the same in all departments of EK.
Only pressure, pressure, pressure- besides of all other negative things do exist.
Once you make a mistake you have to leave.
As I realized that (even if I didn´t had a negative Report), i quit.
Lots of very good collueges had to leave, even if they did nothing wrong, So I decided to go back to my former employer- wich is an european one.
I was lucky that I got my old Position back.

But I have to say that EK´s behaviour is very strange. Always try to be “good looking” for new employees, but as soon as you enter DXB, you´re a slave only. No matter, what Country you´re from, what grade of education you received.
You arrive as a slave, and IF you´re lucky, you will depart as a SLAVE again. But you better NEVER come back again- not even for a short stop- over on a private trip!

Well… I surely will NEVER come back to this fuc**** Country, as I really hate it meanwhile. And I rather fly ALL european Airlines despite any UAE- Airline.
EK is just like a pain in the ass- I wouldn´t know any reason, why it should be different there working on the ground.

On their fuc**** Recruitmentdates, they always try to be a “honest, cincere and attractive” Employer. In truth

EMIRATES IS A NEW KIND OF SLAVERY, BUT TIMES OF SLAVERY IS OVER, “HONEY”.

I am 65 years old and blood sugar patient, my wife is patient of high blood pressure, emirates staff gathered and asked appologise in sence of order, they put us in trouble for about 6 hours,we were having no choice accept to sit on ground with out water to have medicien, in 6 hours we did not see emirates airport services manager SHABAZ BUTT.at about 13,00 airport manager came and receive and hand over complaint to emirates staff.we wrote complaint against this shameless action of emirates staff at emirates. Com ,the staff in duabi in customer affairs @ emirates. Com did not read our complaint carefully and blamed us .they did not answered that why our boarding passes were SNACHED, Why we were OFFLOADED with out any legel/moral/social/regions reason . wounderfull answer which shows education and /training and experience of staff in customer affairs in duabi, boarding passes were snached and answer was that my wife did not approached to boarding gate.other wounderfull answer that we were offloaded on our own request ,shameless answers,on 8th may 2016 about after one month we again approached on same airport to fly with same airline after paying extra money in tickets with same hand carry.second time dimensions were ok and no body stopped us knowingly that this is same hand carry.my questions are,1.with out checking how emirates staff declared that dimentions are not correct where as I have travelled three times before with this hand carry with emirates airline and many other international airlines.2.why emirates staff member did not gave in writing if he was thinking that hand carry is over dimensions. 3.by which law emirates staff member SNACHED our boarding passes being a old sick senior citizens on their own airport and country, is it not SHAMELESS ACTION 4.by which law with out our request we were OFFLOADED 5.is it a training of emirates airline to their staff to CHEAT to passangers as they try to cheat to get signature that We Are Offloaded on our own request 6.is it also training to staff working in customer affairs that don’t read complaint carefully and answer with out facts and proofs such wounderfull and unbelievable answers7.customers affairs wrote that this is our POLICY, shame on such policies.i am traveling internationaly since 26 years,I never face such problem, 8.never heard such unbleaveable shameless answers from any civil office. 9.why ilegel cover is to given to untrained /unsocial black sheep’s which are bad name for airline 10.my request is that our case is REINVESTGATED with proofs and facts, and we are compensated .I know that my nation and country stood up emirates airline on their feet ,staff and POILETS got training from pakistan.please don’t forget MOHSANS waiting for positive answer

Bhakti. So many times we hear about the joys of EK in Pakistan. Write to Skytrax who just voted EK the best airline. Tell them what happened. I guess EK must have paid them to get this award. You English is difficult to follow. Please get it checked and then send to the BBC Travel Show and other major publications.

Mate. I struggled to understand you. This site isn’t for customers to complain. Contact emirates directly. All the best

guys I have a question.. I work for Etihad Airways and I am facing the same dilemma Dragna was facing, the whole 12 hour shift and 4 days on 4 days off, exact same pattern with forced standy by in which we can get called for forced overtime, I have been trapped in this for 5 years and whenever I try to go against it I am threatened with Displinary action. I asked our HR dept if this is legal and they refused to answer, their reply was to check with my management (the same people who are screwing me over!) I am just wondering if anyone knows if this is legal as per uae labour law, where can I go to find an answer, who to speak to.. any help is highly appreciated..
